Volleyball Dominant in Saturday Action

Terriers Down Davidson & Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wofford volleyball team picked up a pair of quality wins Saturday, downing Davidson 3-1 and sweeping Georgia State 3-0 in the opening day of the Georgia State Invitational. With the wins, Wofford improves to 8-4 on the season.
 
In the first match, Wofford rebounded from their last match, a 3-1 loss to Davidson in the Wildcat Classic, to defeat the Wildcats 3-1. The Terriers won the tournament opener 25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22.
 
Three Terriers recorded double-digit kills in the win. Catie Cronister led all players with 19 kills. The sophomore hit .222 and added eight digs and a match high four aces. Colleen Reilly followed with 14 kills and hit .423. Freshman Riley Coonan hit a team high .478 with 11 kills and zero errors on 23 swings. She added four block assists and one solo block at the net. Bijonae Jones added nine kills & 13 digs.
 
Taylor Gill, a junior libero, recorded a match high 22 digs and added five assists. Setter Lorissa King tallied 29 assists and eight digs. Kristen Seibert, playing in her first collegiate game, had an awesome showing. The freshman had 14 kills and nine digs in her debut.
 
In the first set, Wofford jumped out to a 3-0 lead and quickly stretched it to 10-5. Davidson pulled within one at 13-12 but Wofford went on a 6-1 run to lead 19-13. Davidson followed with 5-1 run of their own to cut the Terriers lead to 20-18. Wofford 5-3 run closed out the set and put the Terriers up 1-0.
 
The second set was much more evenly matched. With the teams tied 16-16, a 9-4 run by the Wildcats finished the set and tied the match at a set apiece.
 
Davidson scored first in the third set but Wofford took a lead at 5-4 off of a kill by Reilly and never trailed again. In the fourth set, the teams traded points in the beginning. Tied 8-8, Davidson went on a 4-1 run to take the lead. Wofford regained the lead at 14-13 and didn't trail again, holding on win the set 25-22 and take the match 3-1.
 
Wofford hit atleast .179 in all four sets, including .308 in the first set. The Terriers hit .229 in the match and held the Wildcats to a .188 hitting percentage in the match.
 
In the second match, Wofford swept the host school 25-19, 25-22, 25-17.
 
Cronister again led all players in kills, this time with 22, and hit .341 in the three set win. Coonan followed with five kills and hit .300. Kara Shacklette also hit .300 with four kills and just one error, and Jones also added four kills and 10 digs.
 
Gill again led all players with 13 digs. Jones added 10 and Cronister recorded eight in the win. King had 17 assists and five digs, while Seibert had 12 assists and five digs.
 
Wofford hit .143 and held the Panthers to just .051.
 
The Terriers return to the court Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against South Carolina State (0-8) in the final game of the tournament. Wofford opens Southern Conference play and plays their first home match on Wednesday, Sept. 20 against Furman in the new Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
