Women’s Soccer Comeback Spoiled in 2OT

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team lost 4-3 to UNCG in double overtime on Friday evening at Snyder Field. The Spartans scored three early goals to take a commanding lead but the Terriers fought back to send the game into overtime. In the second overtime period UNCG scored off of a corner kick to clinch the win. Wofford's winning streak ends at four and their record falls to 4-5 and 0-1 in the SoCon.

The scoring started in the 20th minute of the first half when Regan Lehman scored from a Melanie Spensiero corner kick. UNCG added another goal in the 36th minute when Kaley Tucker received a through ball from Quiqui Hita and beat Mayson Liner to take the 2-0 lead. The first half scoring concluded in the 41st minute when Regan Lehman converted on a penalty kick from the circle to put the Spartans up 3-0 heading into the half.

Wofford came out attacking in the second half after tallying seven shots in the first half. Wofford got on the board in the 52nd minute thanks to Hayley Younginer's 14th goal of the season. Younginer snuck a free kick under the Spartan wall from 26 yards out to pull Wofford within two. The Terriers struck again in the 54th when Younginer received a pass from Katie Beuerlein inside the box and stuck with the loose ball to score her second goal of the game and 15th of the season. Just six minutes later Beuerlein connected with Younginer again just outside the box and she beat the UNCG keeper with a rocket to the left corner to tie the game at three.

The two teams played the next 30 minutes scoreless to send the game into overtime. Just 4 minutes into the second overtime period, Ashton Duty connected on a corner kick with Emily Jensen who headed it just beyond the outstretched hands of Mayson Liner to secure the win for UNCG.

Despite the loss, Wofford totaled 19 shots and 11 shots on goal. This is the second straight game that Hayley Younginer has recorded a hat trick and she now has 16 goals on the season, just one away from tying the single season record for Wofford (17). Katie Beuerlein picks up assist number two and three on the season and now has seven points in nine games. Younginer led the team with seven shots and Catie Slater finished with five. Mayson Liner made 2 saves in her first loss of the season.

The Terriers will look to get back on track on Sunday, when they host conference opponent VMI at 1 PM at Snyder Field.
