Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Terriers Triumph Over Samford 93-89

Wofford has won five in a row & 10 of last 11

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Behind a double-double from senior Derrick Brooks and 31 points from Fletcher Magee, the Wofford men's basketball team picked up its first conference road win of the season and fifth win in a row with a 93-89 victory over Samford on Thursday night. Wofford has won 10 of the last 11 games, with the lone loss coming at UNCG on Dec. 30 to open conference play.

With the win, Wofford improves to 13-5 on the season and 4-1 in Southern Conference play, tied for second with UNCG. Samford falls to 7-12 overall and 3-3 in conference action with the loss.

"Scott (Padgett) had Samford ready and they played a good ballgame," said head coach Mike Young. "We didn't do some things very well defensively, but it was good to get down here and play pretty well and take the win home. All in all, it was a good performance from our team."

Magee led Wofford with 31 points and now has a conference high four games with 30+ points. The junior went 10-19 from the field and 8-15 from deep. The eight threes was the most for Magee since the win over Georgia Tech on Dec. 6.

"The first one felt really good coming off my hand, and when I hit the second and third ones I knew my shot was on line tonight," said Magee. "I knew that they press and play zone a lot and it would allow me to get some pretty good looks and luckily they fell tonight."

Brooks recorded his first career double-double thanks to a season high 10 points and a career high 12 rebounds. The lone senior played 32 minutes in the win.  Trevor Stumpe scored 18 points on a career high eight makes from the floor. The sophomore guard also added a career high seven assists, while not committing a single turnover, to spread the love. Stumpe is averaging 17.8 points in conference play.

"Derrick is old and has been around," said Young. "He knows what he is doing and he's really helping our team. He's playing great ball. Trevor is doing it every night – it's not just a flash in the pan, he's doing it night in and night out. What he does for our offense in terms of spacing and passing is pretty neat."

Cameron Jackson was the fourth Terrier in double figures. Jackson went 6-8 from the field and scored 12 points on the night. The well-rounded junior added two assists, two steals and a block.

Both teams shot a high percentage in the game. Wofford shot 53.7% and Samford shot 56.1% from the field, though the Terriers won the battle from deep, outshooting the Bulldogs 46.1% to 41.7%.

The teams traded baskets to begin the game. Wofford led 11-9 but a jumper by Stumpe and a three by Magee pushed the Terriers in front 16-9. The Terriers biggest lead of the game came with 7:35 to go when a jumper by Jackson put Wofford up 17, 35-18. The Bulldogs responded with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to eight. With 1:35 to go in the half, Alex Thompson sunk a three to cut the lead to four, but Wofford used a 7-3 run to end the half and led 49-41 at the break.

To start the second half of play, Magee went to the line to shoot two free throws after Samford's Demetrius Denzel-Dyson was issued a technical as the teams headed to the locker room. Magee, who is 53-55 from the charity stripe this season and one of the nation's best free throw shooters, sunk both to put Wofford up 10 heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

Samford came out hot in the second half. Wofford held on to the lead until the Bulldogs tied it at 56 with 15 minutes to go. The teams continued to swap baskets until Magee hit a three to extend the lead back to seven in favor of Wofford. With 5:42 left, Justin Coleman made a layup to make it a one possession game, 81-79, but then Wofford responded with an 8-1 run and led 89-80.

The pesky Bulldogs wouldn't go away and scored on their next three possessions to chip away at the lead, With 1:29 left, Alex Thompson made two free throws and cut the Wofford lead to 91-88. With three seconds to go, Alex Peters went to the line and made one free throw. Wofford inbounded the ball and Brooks threw a deep pass to Magee who dunked it and sealed the four point victory.

Wofford returns home for the next contest when the Terriers host Chattanooga on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.

"We have to dial it up again in less than 48 hours and be ready to go against Chattanooga," said Young. "We look forward to our preparation between now and then."
