Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Terriers Roll Past VMI 92-53 on Thursday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team picked up its first conference win of the season by rolling past VMI 92-53 on Thursday evening in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. With the win, Wofford improves to 9-5 on the season and 1-1 in Southern Conference play, while VMI falls to 5-8 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

Wofford has beaten VMI for nine straight contests and the 39 point margin of victory is the largest for Wofford in the series history. The Keydets last win came on Feb. 10, 2001.

"We got them early and imposed our will a little bit," said head coach Mike Young. "We had a lot of team plays and we played very well, but we will have to play better on Saturday."

Fletcher Magee, the Southern Conference December men's basketball player of the month, led all players with 25 points in just 21 minutes of play. He finished 9-11 from the field and 6-8 from deep. Entering the game, Magee needed three three's to tie for 10th in SoCon history for three's made in a career, but his six vaulted him into solo ninth. Magee also passed Ronnie Harris for 17th place in the Wofford record books in career points (1,394).

Trevor Stumpe scored a career high 17 points in the win. The sophomore shot 60% from the field, pulled down five rebounds, forced three steals and dished out two assists. Cameron Jackson, the SoCon men's basketball player of the week, was the third Terrier in double-digits. The junior went 7-9 from the floor and added five rebounds and three assists.

Tray Hollowell scored nine points on three made three's while Jackson, Donovan Theme-Love and Derrick Brooks each finished with three assists to lead the team. All 14 players available for action saw playing time.

Wofford started off the game with an 8-0 run thanks to a layup by Stumpe and back-to-back threes by Magee and VMI called an early timeout just two minutes in. Wofford scored out of the timeout to stretch the lead to 10 before VMI got on the board on a layup by Tyler Creammer. However, the Terriers responded with a 19-0 run over a six minute span before VMI scored their next basket, a three by Austin Vereen, to make it 29-5.

Wofford continued to pour on the buckets and used an 11-4 run to go up 40-9 and keep the Keydets at bay. The Keydets finished on a 12-5 run in the last six minutes of the half, but Wofford held on to a commanding 45-21 lead at the intermission.

In the second half, Wofford stretched the lead to as many as 41 with eight minutes to go, and never let VMI pull within 27.

Wofford shot 59% from the field, the team's highest shooting percentage since the Johnson & Wales win nearly a month ago, and held VMI to 39.6%. Wofford shot 66.7% in the second half alone. The Terriers also finished a perfect 7-7 from the line while VMI shot 61.5% (8-13). VMI finished with 20 turnovers to just 12 assists, while Wofford had 17 assists and 11 turnovers. Wofford outscored VMI in the paint, 42-16, and 25-8 in points off turnovers. After getting just four points off the bench in the last outing, the Wofford bench exploded for 32 points.

Wofford remains at home for three straight contests, the team's longest homestand of 2017-18. Next up, Wofford hosts The Citadel on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. Harvard comes to Spartanburg Wednesday, Jan. 10 for Wofford's final non-conference meeting before The Terriers host conference foe Furman on Saturday, Jan. 13.
