Women's Basketball Falls in SoCon Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell 71-46 to Mercer on Thursday afternoon at Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Bears downed the Terriers behind the strong play of star guards Khalia Lawrence and KeKe Calloway. The loss moves Wofford to 6-9 on the season and 0-1 in the southern Conference
 
Mercer opened up the first quarter on a 10-0 run thanks to four early points from Khalia Lawrence. The Bears came out hot, shooting a solid 9-16 (56%) from the field and 3-7 (42%) from the floor while forcing the Terriers into five turnovers in the first period of play. Wofford struggled to handle the defensive pressure of the Bears, shooting just 3-12 (25%) from the floor as Da'Ja Green led the Terriers with four points after one quarter.
 
Despite solid shooting (4-9, 44%) in the second quarter, the Terriers could not cut into the Mercer lead. The Bears played solid defense again forcing the Terriers into seven more turnovers in the second period but Mercer could not capitalize, outscoring Wofford just 12-10 in the second quarter. The Terriers were led by Da'Ja Green who had 12 points, eight boards and two assists at the half time break.
 
The Terriers continued to hang tough with one of the Southern Conference powerhouses in the third quarter as Mercer outscored Wofford just 17-15 in the quarter. After scoring 20 points in the first half, Wofford shut down KeKe Calloway in the third quarter only allowing her to add just three points to her total. Wofford shot it well from the floor, going 5-12 (41%) from the field and 2-4 from downtown but the Bears continued to respond to Wofford's comeback effort.
 
Mercer pulled away from the Terriers in the fourth quarter, outscoring Wofford 21-13 thanks to solid shooting from the floor (5-8, 62%). KeKe Callloway added 11 more points in the quarter and finished the game with a career high 34 points on 13-20 (75%) from the floor and 7-10 (70%) from downtown.
 
Despite the loss, Da'Ja Green finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists while Emily Ryan added 10 points and three rebounds.
 
Wofford will return to the court on Saturday, January 6 when the Terriers host Samford at 2 PM in a Southern Conference Matchup.
