Men's Soccer Falls at Mercer

MACON, Ga. - The Terriers comeback fell short on Saturday night, squandering three goals in the second half to suffer a 5-2 loss against Mercer. The loss drops Wofford to 1-2 in SoCon play and 2-9-1 overall on the season.

Mercer scored its first goal in the 10th minute, corralling a rebound to net one in to take the early 1-0 lead. A costly Wofford foul in the box would grant Mercer a penalty kick to extend its lead to two goals just three minute later. The Terriers played resilient going forward, as freshman Ethan Willie rifled a shot from 30-yards out to put the Terriers on the board, 2-1. Wofford would go on to find the equalizer in the 44th minute with Kyle Nelson meeting a corner kick from Zach Aversano for a sneaky header to send the game into the break tied at 2-2.

The Terriers came out the intermission persistent, though, Mercer would earn its third goal of the night on a header in the 54th minute. Wofford would find itself on the defensive as the Bears attack would pour in two more goals in the 61st and 62nd minute to bust the game wide open, 5-2. The Terriers found efforts on shots from Connor Donohue, Andreas Suri, Kyle Nelson, and Walt Stevens, though, Mercer would go on to hang on for the win at the end of regulation.

The Bears outshot Wofford, 27-17, while Wofford took the corner kick advantage, 6-4.

Kyle Nelson recorded his second goal of the season in the match, while Ethan Willie also added his second goal of the year. Additionally, Zach Aversano added an assist on the night.

Despite the loss, Shane Berson tallied six saves on the night, while Grant Wollam finished the match with three saves of his own.

Next, the Terriers will travel to face Furman for a 7 p.m. kick off on Tuesday, October 16.
