Women's Soccer Tops The Citadel 3-2 On Senior Day

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team came out on top on Senior Day, earning its second conference win of the year against The Citadel, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers honored the graduating members of its 2019 senior class prior to action and earned the end result worthy of the pomp and circumstance of the day. Wofford held a balanced attack in the match, as three different Terriers scored on the day to move the Terriers to 2-6 in SoCon play and 4-11-1 overall on the season.

The Terriers struck first blood in the 13th minute, as senior forward Catie Slater was able to corral the ball out of a crowded jam in the box for an easy chip in to put the Terriers up 1-0 early on. The Bulldogs would respond on the attack, finding the equalizer on a shot from inside the box to tie the score at 1-1 in the 25th minute. Wofford would go on to find a pair of shots from Paige Miller and Katie Gilligan before Savannah Vathy poured in the Terriers second goal of the day in the 42nd minute, rifling a shot from the close left wing to take the lead, 2-1, going into the half.

Wofford outshot The Citadel, 11-5, in the first half, while also taking the corner kick advantage 3-2.

Both teams came out the intermission persistent, with Wofford finding a couple of shots from Dani Segovia and Emma Fletcher. Play was fairly even in the second half up until Katie Gilligan would take on three defenders at the top of the box in the 71st minute, finding separation for a shot in goal to extend the Terriers lead to 3-1. The Bulldogs played resilient, earning a penalty kick opportunity shortly after in the 77th minute, though, Maria Mon reacted quick enough to make the save to keep the Terriers' lead at two goals. The Citadel attempted to make a late comeback, as Devyn Nyhart lofted a shot from about 30-yards out that fell just over the fingertips of Mon to make the score 3-2 in the 87th minute, however, the Terriers would go on to hold their ground over the ensuing three minutes to take the win.

Katie Gilligan earned three points on the day with a goal and assist, while Catie Slater and Savannah Vathy each netted their first goals of the season, Vathy's being her first as a Terrier. Additionally, the Terriers saw efforts from Hayley Younginer, with three shots on the day, as well as Emma Fletcher, Dani Segovia, and Paige Miller, all with two shots each.

Maria Mon earned the win, grabbing five saves on the day.

Next, the Terriers will travel to face South Carolina State on Wednesday, October 17 for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup.
