SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford volleyball team defeated Chattanooga on Friday night, opening up homecoming weekend with a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-21, 25-15), at Richardson Indoor Stadium.
The Terriers boasted a balanced attack against the Mocs, with five players registering five or more kills.
Catie Cronister led the way with nine kills while
Alex Holland finished with eight and
Colleen Reilly finished with seven.
Taylor Gill, who notched 1,000 career digs against UNCG last weekend, totaled 17 in the victory for Wofford.
Chattanooga was in control from the start, jumping out to a 6-1 lead before three straight kills got the momentum going for the Terriers. With the score 17-11, Chattanooga looked like it was about to pull away, but a
Lynze Roos timeout sparked an 8-0 run by Wofford. Holding a 23-22 advantage, the Mocs committed an error and
Alex Holland recorded a kill to complete the set-one comeback.
Wofford came out firing in the second, scoring the first five points of the set. Chattanooga would rally however, taking seven in a row to hold an 11-8 lead. The two sides were tied at 21 when errors down the stretch gave the second set to Wofford 25-21.
Aiming to force a fourth set, the two teams traded points early in the third, but a
Lauren Miller kill ignited the Wofford offense as the team took an 11-5 lead over Chattanooga. Every time the Mocs gained momentum, Wofford responded and never let the deficit get less than five, taking four of the last five points to sweep the Mocs.
With the win, Wofford improves to 11-11 on the season (4-5 SoCon) and returns to action on Saturday, hosting Samford at 6 p.m.
