Women's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision against Furman

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team ended the regular season with a loss on Sunday afternoon, falling to Furman, 2-0, at Snyder Field. Two goals in the first half would force the Terriers to play from behind, as the loss drops Wofford to 2-7 in SoCon play and 5-12-1 overall on the season.

A foul inside the box would cost the Terriers early on in the 12th minute, as it set up the Paladins first goal of the day on a penalty kick from Furman's Caitlyn Reilly to take the early 1-0 lead. Wofford's lone scoring chance in the first half came in the 18th minute, where Katie Gilligan was able to square up for a shot from the top right corner of the box that would unfortunately meet the Furman keeper. Furman remained on the attack going forward, finding their second goal in the 35th minute on a shot that Maria Mon initially saved but unluckily tipped off her foot to roll into goal, extending the lead to 2-0 heading into the intermission.

Furman outshot the Terriers, 9-3, in the first half, while Wofford took the corner kick advantage, earning four to the Paladins' one.

The Paladins continued their persistent attack in the second period, though, Maria Mon played steady in goal, tallying five saves. The Terriers managed to gather a rhythm, finding several spurts of scoring chances throughout the frame. Emma Fletcher nearly put the Terriers on the board in the 63rd minute, meeting a free kick for a header inside the box that Furman's keeper Kellsey Weaver just managed to corral in time. Down the stretch, Hayley Younginer found some breathing room to rocket a shot from about 18-yards out in the 84th minute, though, Weaver would be there for the save to ultimately secure the 2-0 victory for the Paladins at the end of regulation.

The Paladins outshot the Terriers for the match, 20-10, while Wofford took the corner kick advantage, 9-3.

Hayley Younginer paced the Terriers for the day, with four shots, while, Emma Fletcher followed behind with three shots of her own. The Terriers also saw efforts from Catie Slater, with two shots, and Katie Gilligan with one shot.

Despite the loss, Maria Mon recorded nine saves throughout the match.

Next, The Terriers will prepare for the first round of the Southern Conference tournament, in which first round matches for seeds 7-10 will take place on Wednesday, October 24 at campus sites.
