Bulldogs Comeback Edges Women's Soccer 3-2 in SoCon Tournament

Younginer and Mon end the 2018 season with career milestones.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Three unanswered goals by The Citadel in the second half would end the Wofford women's soccer team's season, falling 3-2 on Wednesday night at Snyder Field in the first round of the 2018 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship. No. 9 seed The Citadel advances to the quarterfinals to travel and face No. 1 seed Samford on Saturday, while the Terriers end the season 2-7 in SoCon play and 5-13-1 overall on the year.

The Terriers came out the gates looking for their first goal, seeing a trio of shots from Emma Fletcher, Hayley Younginer, and Catie Slater in the first 11 minutes of play. Hayley Younginer would get things started in the 14th minute, as Katie Gilligan made the most out of a Bulldog turnover, finding Younginer for a laser from the top of the box to give the Terriers the 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs responded on the attack, though, Maria Mon would grab four of her six saves over a 12-minute span to maintain the Terriers' lead.  Younginer extended the lead in the 36th minute, taking on three Bulldogs to finesse a shot from the left side of the box that sailed past The Citadel's keeper, pushing the score to 2-0 going into the half.

The Citadel came out the intermission determined to make a comeback, finding the answer in the 58th minute as Kessy Bradshaw rocketed a shot into the top right corner to put the Bulldogs on the board, 2-1. Riding the momentum, a Wofford foul would go on to set up the equalizer for the Bulldogs in the 65th minute. Mel Mikoy booted a free kick into the box, as a deflected ball saved by Maria Mon would meet Katherine Arroyo to blast one in right in front of the goal, tying the score at an even 2-2.  Both teams played spirited for the duration of play, as both of their seasons were on the line, with Wofford nearly finding the tiebreaker in the 77th minute. Savannah Vathy would find some room down the right side of the field to send a shot inside the box from the close right wing, however, The Citadel's keeper Kelly Brahmbhatt was in good position to make the crucial save. The Citadel responded with the answer in the 80th minute, as Kessy Bradshaw would bury the tiebreaker from the top left side of the box to take the lead 3-2 with nine minutes left to play. The Terriers hustled down the field, managing to find shots for Katie Gilligan, Hayley Younginer, and Maggie Adcock within the last minute of play, though, the Bulldogs would crowd the box, blocking all three shots to earn the comeback win at the end of regulation.

The Citadel held a 23-18 edge in shots for the match, while Wofford took the corner kick advantage, 10-4.

Hayley Younginer notched two goals to finish with seven on the year, while Katie Gilligan added her third assist in the match.

Younginer finishes her Wofford career as the second all-time leader in career goals scored with 35.

Despite the loss, Maria Mon, with 10 saves in the match, set the new school record for saves in a single season, tallying 119 saves in her early career.

Wofford ends the 2018 season 5-13-1 overall and 2-7 in SoCon play, as Hayley Younginer led the team in goals (7) and points (15) while Katie Gilligan led the team in assists (3).
