MACON, Ga. - Wofford outside hitter
Catie Cronister recorded a match-high 21 kills against Mercer on Friday night, setting the program record for career kills with 1,265 as the Terriers fell in four sets. (21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 22-25).
The junior claimed the record, which was previously held by Amanda Liguori (2010-13), in just 88 matches played. Cronister, who set the program record for kills in a season as a sophomore with 556, has recorded 302 thus far in the 2018 season.
Despite Cronister's effort, the match was all Mercer from the start, as the Bears blitzed the Terriers to the tune of 14-5. Wofford rallied to cut the deficit to four (20-16), forcing a Mercer timeout, but the Bears would fend off the Terriers, taking the first set 25-21. The teams traded points to start the second set, until a
Riley Coonan kill sparked a 4-0 run that gave Wofford an 18-15 advantage. The Bears would make the score 23-22, but commit a pair of errors to give the Terriers the second set.
The two sides matched each other to start the third, but the turning point in the set came when the score was tied at 9-9. Mercer's Alexia Morey would record a kill as the Bears took seven of the next nine points to take a commanding lead. Wofford mounted a late comeback attempt, making the score 23-20 in favor of the Bears, but Mercer took the next two points to win the set.
Looking to force a fifth set, the Terriers held a three-point lead in the fourth before Mercer scored three in a row to tie the set at 9.
Bijonae Jones sent home one of her eight kills, momentarily regaining the momentum for Wofford, but Mercer once again took the next three points. A pair of Cronister kills and a Mercer error put the Terriers back in front by two, later taking a 22-20 lead via another Bear error as Wofford looked primed to even the match at two sets apiece. A Paige Alsten kill was all Mercer needed to get going, however, scoring five unanswered as a team to take the set and the match.
Wofford falls to 12-12 on the season (5-6 SoCon), and travels to The Citadel tomorrow for a 7 p.m. start.
