Women's Soccer Earns First SoCon Win 3-1 at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. - Two goals in the second half would propel the Wofford women's soccer team to its first SoCon win of the season, 3-1, over VMI on Friday at Patchin Field. The win moves Wofford to 1-4 in conference play and 3-9-1 overall on the season.

Wofford scored its first goal in the 15th minute when Dani Segovia sent a shot, off the helper from Katie Gilligan, that lifted just above the VMI keeper's head to take the lead 1-0. The Terriers would remain on the attack throughout the duration of the frame, finding shots for Segovia, Hayley Younginer, and Emma Fletcher, however, all shots came off wide to keep the score at 1-0 going into the half.

The Terriers outshot VMI, 6-5, in the first half while the Keydets took three corner kicks in the first half.

Wofford found themselves on the defensive as the Keydets came out the intermission eager to score, firing eight shots in the first 20 minutes of play. Hayley Younginer was able to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute, finishing a cross from Savannah Vathy that beat the keeper for an open net goal. Shortly after in the 77th minute, Katie Gillian would finish the Terriers third goal of the day, beating the keeper on a shot lofted from just past midfield that rolled into the back of the net. VMI's Kiley Cropper would connect on a corner kick to put the Keydets on the scoreboard in the 80th minute, though, Wofford went on to control the duration of play to earn the 3-1 win at the end of regulation.

Katie Gilligan earned two points on the day, with a goal and assist, to pace the Terriers. Dani Segovia and Hayley Younginer each scored a goal to make it their fourth and third respectively on the season, while Savannah Vathy also added her first career assist in the match.

Maria Mon earned the win with nine saves in the match.

Next, the Terriers travel to face UNCG on Sunday, October 7 for 2 p.m. kickoff.
