SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A late goal by
Connor Donohue in the second overtime period would give the Terriers its first conference win of the season, as the Wofford men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over UNCG at Snyder Field on Tuesday night. The Terriers move to 1-1 in SoCon play and 2-8-1 overall on the season.
Â
The first half was played fairly even between both teams up until a Wofford foul, in the 20
th minute, would set up the Spartans only goal in the contest. UNCG's Alex Henderson followed up on a free kick deflection, ripping a shot into the back of the net to give the Spartans the 1-0 lead.
Kyle Nelson would secure the equalizer for the Terriers, connecting on a
Zach Aversano corner kick for a header into the back of the net in the 35
th minute. Wofford's defense went on to hold its ground for the duration of the period to send the score tied at 1-1 going into the half.
Â
UNCG came out the intermission on the attack, though, the Terriers wouldn't allow any easy looks, blocking their first five shot attempts of the half. Both teams played aggressive and solid defensively in the second half, as scoring opportunities were uncertain and hard to come by throughout the frame. The Terriers found efforts from
Ade Akinjogbin,
Eduardo Velazco, and
Ethan Willie, all with shots on goal, but UNCG's keeper Ricky Zarri met each shot to eventually send the game into overtime at the end of regulation.
Â
The first overtime period was played very tight by both sides. UNCG narrowly almost found the tiebreaker in the 99
th minute of play, as a shot nicked the crossbar to keep the Terriers chances of winning alive.
Â
The second overtime period was extremely competitive with both teams looking to find the answer, surpassing 100 minutes of play. Freshman
Rocky Antwi saw his first minutes of action, as he capitalized on an UNCG miscue, setting up
Connor Donohue for a game-winning strike inside the box to earn the 2-1 victory in the 108
th minute.
Â
The Spartans outshot Wofford, 17-12, for the match, while the Terriers took the corner kick advantage 7-4.
Â
