Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Magee, Jackson lift Wofford to victory at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Wofford men's basketball team found its groove from distance on Saturday, shooting 48% (12-25) from 3-point range to defeat High Point 68-60. The preseason All-SoCon duo of Fletcher Magee and Cameron Jackson led the way for the Terriers, as Magee scored a game-high 19 points and Jackson recorded a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) to lift Wofford to its first victory of the 2018-19 season.

Holding just a five-point lead with five minutes to play, Magee scored eight of Wofford's last 10 points to seal the game for the Terriers.

"He's a killer," said Wofford head coach Mike Young on Magee's clutch play. "He works hard and takes his craft seriously, and I'm privileged to coach him."

With the win, Wofford is now 1-1 on the young season, returning home to host Carver College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

After shooting just over 25% from beyond the arc in the season-opener against North Carolina, the Terriers were on fire from the tip on Saturday, going 8-14 from 3-point range (57.1%) in the first half.

Tray Hollowell drilled a pair of threes, putting Wofford ahead 26-22 with 7:29 remaining in the first. Storm Murphy, who scored 12 points in the victory, then drove the lane to put Wofford up by five, as the Terriers went on a 16-3 run to end the half.

Coming out of the break, Jackson established his dominance in the paint, scoring back-to-back buckets, blocking a shot, stealing a pass and hitting a free throw as Wofford looked to pull away from High Point.

"Cameron is a winner," Young said. "That's a guy who can play anywhere in the country, and I'm fortunate to coach him."

Under the tutelage of their decorated coach Tubby Smith, however, the Panthers battled back, going on a 13-0 run capped by a Denny Slay 4-point play that pulled High Point to within three (46-43).

"It's tough to coach against guys like Roy Williams (North Carolina) and Tubby Smith," Young said. "The common denominator between those two guys is that they are hall of fame coaches, and they are hall of fame people."

Murphy would end the scoreless drought at the 10:38 mark, connecting from distance to momentarily put distance between the two sides.  With the score 58-53, Magee nailed back-to-back 3-pointers, capping the game off by tipping the ball to himself past the High Point defense and taking it in for the game-clinching layup.
