SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Led by
Catie Cronister's 20 kills and six service aces, the Wofford Terriers defeated Western Carolina 3-1 on Friday night. The win avenged the October 6 loss loss in Cullowhee and gives the Terriers sole possession of third place in the SoCon standings.
Lorissa King and
Noa Miller each had over 20 assists, tallying 24 and 21, respectively, while
Taylor Gill added 19 digs as Wofford defeated Western Carolina 25-22, 22-25, 25-11, 25-17. Cronister, who tied her season-high of six service aces, picked up 12 digs in the win.
Trailing by a point early, a Cronister kill evened the score at 6-6, prompting the Terriers to take five of the next six points. Western Carolina responded though, as the teams were knotted up at 17 before a pair of kills put Wofford back in front. The Catamounts would cut the deficit to one point three times down the stretch, but a pair of errors from the visitors gave Wofford the 1-0 lead.
Looking to draw even, Western Carolina went on a 5-0 run early in the set, taking a 9-6 lead it would not relinquish. Trailing 15-11, Cronister recorded three-straight kills to pull the Terriers to within one point. Later in the set, a pair of kills from
Bijonae Jones made the score 21-20 in favor of the Catamounts, but Wofford could not overtake Western Carolina, committing a pair of errors that enabled the Catamounts to tie the match at 1-1.
Wofford raced out to a 10-5 advantage in the third, never allowing Western Carolina to cut the deficit to four points or less, dominating the second set to the tune of 25-11.
Despite trailing early in the fourth, the Catamounts rallied to take a 12-11 lead, extending the margin to three and forcing a Wofford timeout. After Millers set up Cronister who delivered a kill to make the score 16-14 Western Carolina, Cronister reeled off five aces as the Terriers went on a 9-0 run, claiming victory when
Lauren Miller rose up for a solo block to clinch the set and the match for Wofford.
Wofford now sits at 14-12 (7-6 SoCon) and welcomes first-place ETSU to Spartanburg tomorrow at 4 p.m.
