SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford volleyball team fell in straight sets to 2018 SoCon regular-season champion ETSU on Saturday. The Terriers were edged out in the first set 25-23, dropped the second 25-16 and fell in the third 25-23.
Catie Cronister led the Wofford attack with 15 kills, with seniors
Bijonae Jones and
Colleen Reilly picking up seven apiece. Senior libero
Taylor Gill recorded 16 digs and
Lorissa King led the way with 17 assists.
Wofford looked strong to start the match, taking an 11-4 lead and forcing an ETSU timeout. The Terriers kept the Bucs at bay, making the score 20-13 with a Cronister kill, forcing another timeout by ETSU. The Bucs responded out of the break however, taking seven-straight points to tie the set at 20-20. With the score knotted up at 23, Aj Lux recorded back-to-back kills to give ETSU the 1-0 lead.
The two sides traded points to open up the second, but a Kaela Massey kill got things going for ETSU, as the Bucs took the next six points to give themselves a 17-12 advantage. The Terriers could not cut into the deficit as ETSU went up two sets to none.
Wofford hung tough in the early part of the third set, keeping the deficit to as little as two points until later in the set. With the score 17-15 in favor of the Bucs, ETSU jumped out to a 24-19 lead, looking to clinch the SoCon title with the win. The Terriers battled back, taking the next five points as they threatened to force a fourth set. ETSU would claim victory moments later when Mariah McPartland recorded a kill to make the score 25-23.
Wofford is now 14-13 (7-7 SoCon) on the season and returns to the court on Wednesday, traveling to Furman for a 7 p.m. match with the Paladins.
