GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Wofford volleyball team was edged out by Furman on Wednesday, falling to the Paladins in five sets (34-32, 15-25, 20-25, 25-21, 12-15). The Terriers, who are now 14-14 overall (7-8 SoCon), finish up their regular season on Friday at UNCG.
Lorissa King and
Noa Miller set up their teammates with 23 and 22 kills apiece, as three Terriers recorded a dozen or more kills in
Catie Cronister (15),
Riley Coonan (13) and
Colleen Reilly (12).
Trailing 12-8 in the first, Wofford battled back to tie the set at 12-12 before a pair of kills put the Terriers in front. The two sides traded points, forcing each other to take late timeouts in an effort to extend the set. Trailing 25-24, the Paladins rallied to keep the set alive, taking two points in a row to make the score 26-25. Wofford and Furman would then trade points until a
Colleen Reilly kill and a Paladin error gave the Terriers a 31-30 advantage. Wofford did not relinquish its lead from this point on, eventually claiming set one on a
Riley Coonan kill.
The second set belonged to Furman from the start, taking a commanding 8-1 lead and never looking back, evening the match at one set apiece. The teams looked evenly matched to start the third set, with neither side yielding ground until Furman went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Terriers battled throughout the set, but Furman ultimately took a 2-1 lead after Neci Harris recorded a pair of kills.
Wofford took an early lead in the fourth, but could not put any distance between themselves and the Paladins until the latter part of the set, taking a 19-14 lead after Cronister and
Kelly Bossert sent home kills. The closest Furman got was three, committing an error to help the Terriers clinch set number four.
The fifth and decisive set was neck and neck to start, until Furman reeled off six points in a row to take a commanding 12-6 lead. Wofford would not go down easily however, taking six of the next eight points and forcing a Furman timeout. The Paladins responded out of the break, taking the next point via a kill from Jordan McNeill to give Furman the victory.
