Women's Basketball Tops Winthrop, 70-53

Carman set a new career-high with 20 points

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team picked up its second consecutive win at Richardson Indoor Stadium on Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Winthrop Eagles 70-53. The Terriers were hot from beyond the arc, shooting 50 percent on 8-of-16 shooting on the night, while holding the Eagles to 37 percent (19-52 FG) shooting from the field. The win moves Wofford to an even 3-3 overall record while Winthrop drops to 1-4.
 
Wofford started the game forcing five consecutive Winthrop turnovers to gain a 7-0 lead within the first three minutes of play. The Eagles got on the board with a layup at the 5:12 mark, as the Terriers would respond with a trey ball and jumper from Jackie Carman and Chloe Wanink respectively to push the score to 12-2. Winthrop then went on a 6-0 run, answering a Jamari McDavid jumper with a 3-pointer to end the quarter down one, 14-13.
 
Carman would drill a 3-pointer to start the second quarter, though, the Eagles responded with a 3-pointer and jumper of their own to take its first lead of the night, 18-17. Carman went on to hit another three to regain the lead for the Terriers, as both teams would trade baskets over a two-minute span until Wofford would erupt for a 7-0 run on consecutive jumpers from Wanink and Da'Ja Green. A free throw by Green would then go on to send the Terriers up 32-25 heading into the locker rooms.
 
The Terriers jumped out to a 10-point lead coming out the intermission, as Chloe Wanink drilled a three on the first possession of play. A jumper by Marissa Bayer sparked an 8-0 run, that saw layups from Carman and Wanink, to give the Terriers its largest lead of the night at 48-30 with 3:13 left in the period. Winthrop would then convert a three and a few lay-ins to cut the deficit to 13 points by the end of the quarter, 52-39.
 
Wofford controlled the fourth quarter, never dropping a double-digit lead throughout the frame. A short-corner jumper by Jamie Grob followed by another Jackie Carman three would match the Terriers largest lead at 18 points with 6:59 left. Maintaining an at least 15-point lead going forward, the Terriers would see final scores from freshmen Niyah Lutz and Alea Harris, on a layup and 3-pointer respectively, before earning the 70-53 victory at the end of regulation.
 
The Terriers forced 20+ turnovers for the second straight game, as Winthrop committed 24 turnovers on the night. Wofford also took the edge in rebounds for the contest, out-rebounding Winthrop 39-28.
 
Freshman Jackie Carman paced the Terriers with a career-high 20 points, on 7-of-14 shooting (50 percent), while hitting 4-of-9 shots from deep. Chloe Wanink followed with 19 points (8-18 FG, 3-5 3FG) and seven rebounds. The Terriers also received solid efforts from Jamari McDavid (eight points, nine rebounds), Cairo Booker (five points, three rebounds, four assists), Marissa Bayer (four points, five rebounds, two assists) and MaryMartha Turner (four points, three rebounds).
 
Next, Wofford will travel to take on UNC Asheville on Sunday, November 25 for a 2 p.m. non-conference matchup.
