Cold Shooting Costs Women's Basketball, 60-46, at UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - A rough shooting day would allow the Wofford women's basketball team to fall on the road, 60-46, against UNC Asheville at Kimmel Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs were active in turning defense into offense throughout the contest, as 45 of their 60 points on the day came off turnovers and fast breaks. The loss drops Wofford to 3-4 overall while UNC Asheville moves to 3-2. 

The Bulldogs opened the contest on a 5-0 run before the Terriers would get on the board on a Marissa Bayer layup and Cairo Booker jumper. UNC Asheville converted a pair of lay-ins and a jumper to maintain the lead, though, jumpers from Chloe Wanink and Jackie Carman would cut the deficit to three, 11-8, at the 2:52 mark. The Bulldogs went on to extend their lead on back-to-back Brooke Jordan-Brown layups while Wanink would knock down another jumper to make the score 15-10 at the end of the quarter. 

Wofford rattled off seven unanswered points to start the second quarter, seeing layups and a pair of free throws from Booker and Carman respectively to make the score 19-17 with 5:36 left in the half. Both teams would trade baskets before the Bulldogs pushed their lead to six on a Jessica Wall 3-pointer at the 3:07 mark. Da'Ja Green went to cut the margin to five, converting a jumper to end the half trailing 27-22.

UNC Asheville came out the halftime period spirited, as they capitalized on turnovers with transition to bust out their largest lead of the day, 46-26, by the 3:46 mark. The Bulldogs shot 64 percent (9-14 FG) in the third quarter, converting 11 fast-break points, 10 of which came off turnovers. A free throw by Cairo Booker would spark a 5-0 run for the Terriers, seeing layups from Marissa Bayer and Jamari McDavid, cutting the lead to 15 points at 46-31 by the end of the quarter. 

Both teams went on to trade baskets, with UNC Asheville exceeding a 20-point lead throughout the duration of the period. The Bulldogs continued to score steadily, though, Wofford outscored UNC Asheville in the fourth quarter, 15-14. Late free throws from Cairo Booker and a pair of scores from Carman and Niyah Lutz would cut the lead to 14 points, eventually ending the contest in UNC Asheville's favor, 60-46, at the end of regulation. 

UNC Asheville shot 51 percent (27-53 FG) from the field on the day, dominating the inside with 42 points in the paint. The Bulldogs held Wofford to 31 percent (17-55 FG) shooting from the field, as the Terriers failed to convert a 3-point field goal (0-7 3FG) for the first time this season. The Bulldogs also took the edge in rebounds for the contest, 40-31. 

Jackie Carman led the Terriers with 16 points (4-12 FG) and three rebounds, while going a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Cairo Booker followed behind with a season-high 13 points (5-8 FG), two rebounds, and one assist. The Terriers also saw efforts from Marissa Bayer (six points, one rebound), Chloe Wanink (four points, five rebounds), and Da'Ja Green (three points, three assists). 

Next, Wofford will host Gardner-Webb on Thursday, November 29, at Richardson Indoor Stadium for a 7 p.m. tip.
