Women's Basketball Downed by Mountaineers, Wanink Nets 1,000th Career Point

Wanink becomes 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 point milestone

BOONE, N.C. - The Wofford women's basketball team fell to Appalachian State, 94-70, at the Holmes Center on Monday evening, as redshirt-junior Chloe Wanink became the 14th Terrier in program history to eclipse the 1,000 career point milestone. The Mountaineers move to 6-4 overall, while Wofford drops to an even 6-6 record.

Appalachian State crashed the boards with intensity, out-rebounding the Terriers, 57-31. The Mountaineers also held Wofford to 39.2 percent (29-74 FG, 6-19 3FG) shooting from the field for the contest.

Four different players scored in double figures, as Chloe Wanink finished with a team-high 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Wanink also moved into sixth all-time in program history in career 3-point field goals made (118).

Sophomore Jamari McDavid and freshman Jackie Carman followed behind, both netting 12 points each. McDavid also added four rebounds, two assists, and three steals, while Carman grabbed two rebounds. Sophomore Da'Ja Green rounds out the double-figure scorers for Wofford, finishing with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Additionally, senior Marissa Bayer recorded nine points and four rebounds in 24 minutes.

The Terriers came out the gates seeing a Chloe Wanink pull-up jumper and Jackie Carman 3-pointer to jump out to a 5-4 lead early on. A Wanink steal would set up a Jamari McDavid jumper before Appalachian State's Madi Story would convert an and-1 to tie the score at 7-7 by the 6:40 mark. Story, Appalachian State's leading scorer, would then add three of her 10 points in the first quarter on a trey ball to spark a quick 7-0 run, forcing a Wofford timeout down 12-7 with 4:22 left. The Mountaineers came out the timeout persistent, pushing a 15-4 run that would extend the lead to 16 points, 27-11, by the end of the first.

A pair of Mountaineer free throws would extend the lead to 19 (30-11), before Chloe Wanink would answer with her 1,000th career point on a short corner jumper. The Terriers would climb back behind five more points from Wanink, in addition to scores from Marissa Bayer, Da'Ja Green, and McDavid, to cut the deficit to 12, 36-24, with 4:50 left. Wanink continued to pace the Terriers with 13 first half points, though, the Mountaineers shot 60 percent from the field in the period to maintain a 47-32 lead by the end of the half.

Appalachian State dominated the boards in the first half, holding a 31-10 edge, including 12 offensive rebounds. Additionally, the Mountaineers were efficient from the floor, shooting 51.3 percent, as 30 of Appalachain State's 47 first half points came from inside the paint. The Terriers shot just 44.1 percent in the first half, connecting on 15-of-34 attempts.

Jumpers from Bayer and Da'Ja Green would cut into the Mountaineer lead to start the second half, though, five straight points from Story and a layup would give Appalachian State a 20-point lead, 56-36, by the 5:10 mark. Three points from Marissa Bayer would cut the deficit to 17, before Appalachian State would convert a 3-pointer and series of free throws to take a 25-point lead (64-39) at 2:17. The Terriers played resilient behind six points from Green and a Niyah Lutz and-1, though, Madi Story continued her heroics with 12 points in the third to maintain a 21-point lead at the end of the period, 71-50.

The Terriers fought hard, seeing three Jackie Carman threes throughout the frame, however, the Mountaineers remained consistent, holding an at least 20-point favor for the remainder of the contest. Appalachian State was hot from the floor in the fourth quarter, shooting 50 percent (9-18 FG, 3-6 3FG) in the period to eventually take the 94-70 victory at the buzzer.

Appalachian State shot 36-for-74 (48.6%) for the contest, converting 44 points in the paint, and 30 percent (7-23 3FG) from beyond the arc. Redshirt-senior Madi Story also earned her 1,000th career point in the contest, finishing with a game-high 28 points for the Mountaineers.

The Terriers return back home to Spartanburg, welcoming Brevard College to Richardson Indoor Stadium on Wednesday, December 19 for a 2 p.m. tip before the holiday break.
