SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Chevez Goodwin recorded his first career double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, as the Wofford men's basketball team pummeled Kentucky Christian 112-58 on Thursday. The victory represents the first time Wofford has scored 100 or more points since its 109-92 victory over The Citadel last season (1/6/18), and the second time this season that Wofford has defeated an opponent by 50 or more points (vs. Mars Hill 11/23/18).
Wofford now sits at 7-3 overall, hosting Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 2 p.m.
"I love this time of year," said head coach
Mike Young. "We have Coastal Carolina, UNC Asheville and Mississippi State coming up. We really have a chance to work on some things and shore up some areas before conference play."
Five Terriers scored in double figures for the second time this season, led by Magee's game-high 27 points, going 8-for-12 from 3-point range.
Nathan Hoover had 18 points,
Cameron Jackson scored 16 and
Matthew Pegram totaled 10 points as 12 different players saw action in the game.
"It's a very deep team," Goodwin said. "It's probably the deepest team I've ever been on. Everybody on our team knows how to play and knows how to win."
Wofford established dominance right from the start, jumping out to a 11-0 lead with
Ryan Larson dishing out assists on the first three buckets. Magee, who failed to hit a three for the first time in 61 contests at Kansas on Tuesday, was hot from the start, going 3-for-4 from downtown.
"Ryan (Larson) gave us great minutes tonight," Young said. "I thought Storm played well, and I wanted Fletcher to see the ball go in tonight, and he did."
As the half wore on, Jackson slammed down back-to-back dunks, and
Donovan Theme-Love found Goodwin under the bucket for another jam to put Wofford up 33-13.
"Donovan had a great preseason for us," said Young of Theme-Love. "He missed about 10 days after rolling his ankle, but he looked good tonight. He can help us win, and he showed that with his six assists."
Wofford would extend its lead to 29 going into the break (59-30) as
Nathan Hoover hit two free throws to cap off the scoring in the period.
The three ball continued to fall for the Terriers in the second, as Magee hit a pair and Hoover drained one from the corner giving Wofford a 75-34 lead with 14:44 to play. With the score 84-38, Magee was locked in, hitting three more 3-pointers to give him 27 points on eight threes.
After a pair of dunks from Michael Manning Jr., Goodwin put an exclamation point on the game when
Drew Cottrell grabbed a board, and Goodwin slammed it home to give Wofford the 112-58 victory.
"I'm happy how our guys handled this game and games like these," said Young. "But now we've got two days to prepare for Coastal Carolina. We'll be ready on Sunday."
