Magee scores 2,000th point, Wofford downs Coastal Carolina 82-71

Jackson drops season-high 24 points

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford senior guard Fletcher Magee scored the 2,000th point of his career on Sunday afternoon as the Terriers took down Coastal Carolina 82-71 at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

As a team, Wofford outrebounded its opponent for the seventh-straight contest (34-29), turning the ball over just seven times against the Coastal Carolina press.

Senior forward Cameron Jackson led Wofford with 24 points and nine rebounds, finishing just a point shy of his career high (25, vs. VMI 1/19/17). Magee, who became just the sixth Terrier to score 2,000 or more points, totaled 18 against the Chanticleers while Nathan Hoover had 15 and Storm Murphy scored 13.

With the win, the Wofford improves to 8-3 overall, returning to the court Saturday, hosting UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.

"Our guys did a good job down low against Cuthbertson," head Coach Mike Young said. "I wish we would have done a little better against Trevion Brown, but it was a good day, and to get to 8-3 before exams is encouraging and the team has a lot to look forward to."

Jackson wasted no time getting going, scoring the first bucket of the game just 18 seconds in. Keve Aluma grabbed an offensive rebound as Wofford quickly went up 4-0. After Jackson hit a pair of free throws, Magee nailed his first 3-pointer of the game to make the score 9-0.

"Cameron's got an uncanny ability to draw contact," Young said of Jackson. "He's got such an advantage in the post, and we probably needed to get him even more touches. He was awesome tonight."

Coastal Carolina would work itself back into the game, hitting a pair of threes and closing the gap which forced a Wofford timeout. The Terriers responded after the break, as Nathan Hoover hit a trey to make the score 21-13 in favor of Wofford.

Jackson continued to dominate down low, scoring his 12th point of the half to keep the Wofford lead at eight points. The Terriers would slowly extend their lead, as Murphy scored a driving layup to give Wofford a 14-point lead at the break (35-21).

Much like the first half, Jackson opened up the scoring for Wofford in the second, hitting a pair of free throws and converting a spinning layup in the paint moments later to give Wofford the 41-28 advantage. The Chanticleers would cut the deficit to nine, but once again, Jackson was there to answer on the offensive end, scoring his 20th point of the night as Wofford held a 50-39 advantage.

Coastal Carolina would not go away easily, but Magee drove the lane and finished in traffic to put Wofford back out in front by double figures. The next trip down the floor, the school's leader in career 3-pointers (395), eclipsed 2,000 points in a Terrier uniform by draining a three to make the score 65-53.

"That's a heck of an accomplishment for Fletcher," said Young of Magee's 2,000th point. "He's earned them too. He took people by surprise a little his freshman year, but to score the bulk of those points when defenses are game planning for him, that's an awfully impressive thing, and I'm proud of him."

From this point, Wofford would ice the game at the free throw line, picking up its eighth win of the season.
