Terriers Upset ETSU, Earn 20th Win of Season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Wofford picked up its first 20 win season since 2014-15 and the fifth under head coach Mike Young with a 75-71 upset win in front of a sold out, rowdy crowd at ETSU, the top ranked team in the Southern Conference.

With the win, Wofford improves to 20-10 on the season and 11-6 in conference play, while ETSU falls to 23-7 overall and 14-3 in the SoCon, having lost two straight at home. The two teams split the regular season meetings. The Terriers gave the conference four 20+ win teams in consecutive seasons for the first time in the 97 year history of the SoCon.

"Twenty wins is a marvelous accomplishment for this team," said Young. "I have a lot of respect for Steve (Forbes) and their players. They play the right way and are tough. I thought we played hard and deserved to win today."

The Terriers had a well-balanced attack on offense as four players finished in double-figures. Cameron Jackson led Wofford in both scoring (18) and rebounding (7). He added two assists, a game high three blocks, and one steal in the win. Fletcher Magee followed with 17 points on 44.4% shooting. Nathan Hoover scored 13 points and shot 62.5%, while Storm Murphy tallied 12 points and a team high four assists.

Wofford jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the game, but ETSU used an 8-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. The Terriers tied it at 14 with 12:18 to go on a three by Hoover. For the next four minutes, neither team led by more than three until a layup by Jalan McCloud put the Bucs in front 23-19. With 5 minutes to go, Hoover again sank a three to put the Terriers in front 26-25, but Bo Hodges converted on a layup to retake the lead. Desonta Bradford converted on an and-one to make the lead four, but Magee and Murphy nailed back-to-back threes to put Wofford up two. With five seconds to go, Peter Jurkin hit two free throws and ETSU led 36-34, but Hoover made a layup as time expired to tie it at 36.

Out of the half, Hoover hit a three and Trevor Stumpe made a layup to run the Terriers' lead to five. ETSU tied it at 45 on a three by McCloud but a dunk by Jackson put the Terriers back on top. Devontavius Payne responded with a three to give ETSU one of their two one-point leads of the half. A jumper by Keve Aluma put Wofford ahead 49-48 with 13:05 to go. The Terriers held on to the lead until Jurkin hit two free throws with 7:33 left and gave ETSU their second lead of the half, 57-56. Wofford regained the lead before a layup by David Burrell tied the game for the 10th time at 66-66.

A layup by Murphy and back-to-back free throws by Magee pushed Wofford in front 70-66. ETSU threatened, but Wofford answered every time. Hodges cut it to two, but Magee answered with a jumper. Bradford made a free throw and a layup to pull ETSU within one, 72-71, but Wofford hit three free throws down the stretch to seal the 75-71 win.

Wofford shot 56.7%, the team's third highest field goal percentage in conference play, and held ETSU to 47.7%. The Terriers outshot the Bucs from beyond the arc, 47.1% to 35%, and outrebounded the Bucs 27-24. Wofford finished with 16 assists to 13 turnovers.

Wofford's final regular season game is Sunday, Feb. 25 against Mercer. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

"Mercer is playing well," said Young. "Our crowds have been unbelievable and I'm looking forward to another good time in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium."
