Baseball Downs Seton Hall 12-5

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team picked up a 12-5 victory over Seton Hall on Saturday at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and added six runs in the seventh inning to secure the win.
                    
Wofford improves to 3-3 on the season, while Seton Hall is 1-4. Andrew Orzel led the Terriers with four hits, while McClain Bradley had three hits and four RBIs. The Pirates were led by Dana Casey with a three-run homer in the eighth inning.
 
Seton Hall had a single in the first inning, but the runner was stranded at second. Wofford opened the bottom of the first with a walk by Brett Rodriguez. Walks to Mack Nathanson and Cody Miller had the bases loaded with one out. A balk with two outs made it 1-0, but the Terriers stranded two runners at the end of the inning. The Pirates had runners on base after an error and single. With two outs, a single to right field tied the game at 1-1 and a runner was caught stealing to end the top half.
 
Andrew Orzel led off the bottom of the second with a single, but was unable to advance. Seton Hall loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third inning. A wild pitch advanced the runners and gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead. Two runners were stranded at the end of the top half. Wofford was retired in order in the bottom of the third and both teams were retired in order in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, Seton Hall had a single with one out. A fly ball to center and a throw to third turned the double play to end the top half.
 
Lawson Hill hit a double to lead off the bottom of the fifth, his first career hit. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Malsch and Brett Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. A single up the middle by McClain Bradley scored Hill to tie the game at two and the runners advanced on the throw into scoring position. A ground out by Mack Nathanson drove in Rodriguez for a 3-2 lead. Cody Miller walked and a single up the middle by Max McDougald added a run. A single by Colin Davis scored Miller and McDougald for a 6-2 advantage.  Lawson Hill was hit by a pitch to load the bases but a fly ball ended the frame.
 
The Pirates had a lead-off single in the top of the sixth, but the runner was stranded at second. Wofford added a single in the bottom of the sixth by McClain Bradley. In the top of the seventh, Seton Hall left a runner on third base. Colin Davis reached on an error with one out in the bottom of the seventh. A hit-and-run by Andrew Orzel gave Wofford runners on the corners. Lawson Hill's bunt single scored Davis for a 7-2 lead. A double to the wall in left center by Alex Malsch pushed two more runs across for a 9-2 advantage. After a walk by Brett Rodriguez, McClain Bradley cleared the fence in left field as Wofford went up 12-2.
 
In the top of the eighth with two outs, the Pirates had a double and a walk. A home run by Casey Dana to center field cut the lead to 12-5. Seton Hall left two runners on base. In the bottom of the eighth, Andrew Orzel was stranded after a single. In the top of the ninth with two outs, the Pirates had a double before a strikeout ended the game.
 
Austin Higginbotham (1-1) started for the Terriers and went seven innings with two unearned runs allowed on seven hits. He struck out six and issues one walk. Jake Hershman worked two-thirds of an inning with three runs allowed on two hits. Anthony Garcia went the final 1.1 innings with two hits allowed and three strikeouts.
 
Seton Hall pitcher Andrew Politi (0-2) went the first 4.2 innings with five runs allowed on three hits. He struck out five batters and issued four walks. Tyler Burnham gave up one run on three hits. Ryan McLinskey allowed six runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. Blake Espinal worked two-thirds of an inning with one strikeout. Ryan Lutz threw the final inning and gave up one hit with one strikeout.
 
Up next for the Terriers will be a home game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against Presbyterian College, weather permitting. Wofford will play the first road game of the season on Tuesday at Georgia.
