SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 9-2 by Presbyterian College on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Blue Hose took an early 3-0 lead after three innings and added four runs in the sixth inning. Wofford plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Presbyterian held the Terriers to only one hit in the final three innings.

Wofford falls to 3-4 on the season, while Presbyterian is 3-6. The Terriers were led by
Mack Nathanson with two hits, while pitchers
Grant Byers and
Matt Ellmyer each struck out four. A.J. Priaulx had three hits for the Blue Hose and Jonathan White had a three-run homer.

The Blue Hose left one runner on base in the top of the first after a fielding error by the Terriers.
Brett Rodriguez led off the bottom of the first by reaching on an error, but the inning ended with one runner stranded. Presbyterian opened the second inning with a double and a single. A wild pitch plated a run for a 1-0 lead. Wofford was retired in order to end the second inning. In the third inning, a walk was followed by an RBI double for a 2-0 advantage for the Blue Hose. A wild pitch moved the runner to third and a ground out plated a run to make it 3-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Terriers were retired on three straight strikeouts. The Blue Hose led off the fourth with a runner reaching second on a Wofford error. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner and a hit by pitch had runners on the corners. A strikeout and ground out ended the scoring chance.
Mack Nathanson walked with one out in the bottom of the fourth and stole second, but was stranded. Presbyterian had a single with two outs in the top of the fifth before a ground ball ended the half.

Andrew Orzel doubled down the left field line with one out in the bottom of the fifth. He moved to third on a wild pitch, but a ground out ended the scoring opportunity. A hit by pitch opened the sixth inning for the Blue Hose, which was followed by back-to-back strikeouts. They added a single and then a double down the right line made it a 4-0 lead. A three-run shot over the fence in left field by Jonathan White pushed the lead to 7-0.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth,
McClain Bradley singled and
Mack Nathanson doubled. A double by
Cody Miller drove in both runners to cut the lead to 7-2. The Blue Hose had one hit in the top of the seventh inning and the Terriers were retired in order to end the seventh inning. Thatcher Coleman hit a solo home run to led off the top of the eighth inning and the Blue Hose took an 8-2 lead. With two outs in the bottom of the eight,
Mack Nathanson singled up the middle. He was unable to advance after a foul out. After two outs in the top of the ninth, the Blue Hose singled and then an RBI double added a run to make it a 9-2 game. Wofford was retired in order to end the contest.

Grant Byers (0-1) started for the Terriers and went 3.2 innings with three runs allowed on three hits, along with four strikeouts.
Matt Ellmyer threw 2.1 innings with four runs allowed on four hits and four strikeouts.
Tyler McGuigan added two innings with one run given up on two hits.
Jake Zoller gave up one run on two hits and had one strikeout.

Presbyterian pitcher Tanner Chock (1-0) threw six innings with two runs allowed on four hits. He struck out eight batters with one walk. Maxx Harpalani did not allow a hit in an inning with one strikeout. Ryan Hedrick gave up one hit in an inning. Will Smith had one strikeout in the ninth and did not allow a hit.

Wofford will play the first road game of the season on Tuesday at Georgia, followed by a home game against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
