MACON, GA. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell 80-39 at Mercer on Saturday afternoon in Hawkins Arena. The conference leading Bears downed the Terriers thanks to a 31-3 run that lasted from the beginning of the second quarter into the opening minutes of the third. The loss moves Wofford to 10-14 on the season and 3-6 in the Southern Conference.

It was a slow start to the game for both squads as the teams combined for just 16 points in the first six minutes of play. With the score tied at eight, the Bears ripped off a 9-4 run to lead 17-12 at the end of one quarter. The Terriers had four different players record a point in the quarter as
Da'Ja Green paced Wofford with five points. As a team, Wofford shot just 3-11 (27%) in the quarter.

The Bears turned up the defensive heat in the second quarter holding the Terriers to just five points on 2-13 (54%) from the floor. Leading by five after one quarter, Mercer held Wofford scoreless for almost nine minutes of game time. During the scoreless stretch for the Terriers, the Bears ripped off 21 unanswered points to increase the lead to 40-14. Wofford finally broke the run with a basket, ending the half with the Bears leading 40-17. Green led the Terriers with seven points, two boards and an assist at the half while Kahlia Lawrence led Mercer with 13 points, five boards and three assists.

The Bears opened the quarter on a 10-0 run to increase the lead to 50-17 which proved to be too great a margin for Wofford to overcome. The league leading Bears knocked down one contested jump shot after another during the dominant offensive performance. As a team Mercer shot 32-64 (50%) from the floor and 12-14 (86%) from the free throw line.

Despite the loss, Green finished with nine points, four boards and three assists in 35 minutes.
Cairo Booker and
Jamari McDavid finished with seven a piece while
Anna Claire Atha,
Marissa Bayer and
Hannah Morgan all had five. As a team, Wofford shot just 12-51 (24%) from the floor and 2-17 (12%) from downtown.

Wofford will return to the court on Thursday evening when the Terriers host Western Carolina at 7 PM. The Terriers defeated the Catamounts 54-48 in Cullowhee on January 13 for Wofford's lone road conference victory.
