Women's Basketball Falls in SoCon Tournament

Asheville, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team fell to ETSU 78-64 on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament. The seventh seeded Terriers and second seeded Bucs played a close first quarter, but ETSU scored 30 points in the second quarter to pull away from Wofford. The Terriers end the season 10-20 overall and 3-11 in the Southern Conference.

"I just want to give ETSU a lot of credit. They are a good basketball team, they are well coached," said head coach Jimmy Garrity. "They won almost every statistical category on the stat sheet. We knew they were going to press us, we knew it was going to be a fast-paced game. We needed to get stops so they couldn't set up the press, but I am extremely proud of our team. We did a good job of never giving up. You never want a season to end, but I'm really proud of our seniors. They are going to do great things in life."

Wofford opened the game with consecutive turnovers allowing ETSU take an early 4-0 lead. After a few minutes the Terriers settled into the game, scoring six straight points to give Wofford its first lead of the game. The Bucs responded right back with two consecutive triples from Tianna Tarter and Shy Copney to make it 10-6. Prior to the media timeout, Wofford regained the lead 11-10, thanks to a deep ball from Da'Ja Green and a jumper from Marissa Bayer.

Out of the break, the Bucs ripped off a 9-4 run, marking the fourth lead change of the opening quarter. After Green hit from distance, Wofford had a chance for a rare 5 point possession but Jamie Grob split a pair at the line to keep the scored tied at 19. At the end of one period, ETSU led 21-19 thanks to eight points from Tarter, the conference's second leading scorer. Green played in all ten opening minutes and tallied eight points, an assist and one board to lead the Terriers.

ETSU's Erica Haynes-Overton kicked off the second quarter with a 5-0 run of her own during which she hit from long range and converted a steal into an easy layup. Emily Ryan's three point shot on the other end cut the deficit to five but the Bucs had a response to every Terrier bucket as Haynes-Overton converted another jumper to make it 28-21. The teams traded buckets over the next two-plus minutes as ETSU led 33-24 at the media break. Out of the timeout, the Bucs ripped off an 18-6 run to end the first half leading 51-30. As a team ETSU scored 30 points on 12-21 (57%) from the field and 5-7 (71%) from three in the second quarter.

The Terriers and Bucs combined for just 22 points in the third quarter as the teams struggled to find any rhythm on the offensive side of the ball. The teams combined to shoot just 9-35 (25%) from the floor and 0-8 from downtown. In the quarter, Cairo Booker scored six of Wofford's 12 points while Britney Snowden added six for the Bucs. ETSU's high speed-pace of play continued to stifle the Terriers in the fourth. Although Wofford trailed by as many as 23, the Terriers showed no quit over the final quarter of the season, outscoring the Bucs 22-17 in the final ten minutes of play.

Despite the loss, Wofford shot 23-57 (40%) from the floor and 7-19 (36%) from downtown. Cairo Booker led the Terriers with 18 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, just two shy of a triple-double. Da'Ja Green finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds and two assists, moving into fourth-place in school history for most assists in a single season. Seniors Emily Ryan and Kelsey Lambdin finished with eight and seven points respectively in their final games donning the old gold and black.
