ROCK HILL, S.C. – Despite a hat trick from junior
Sophie Smith, the Wofford women's lacrosse team fell 20-7 at Winthrop on Thursday night. With the loss, Wofford falls to 0-7 on the season, while Winthrop improves to 6-3 with the win.

Hannah Mutch scored two while
Hannah Wurzel and
JoJo Franklin each added one.

Winthrop jumped on the board quickly and scored four goals in the first five minutes of play. Wurzel scored the first Wofford goal two and a half minutes later and before Mutch added another two minutes later while the Terriers were a man up. Up 4-2, Winthrop scored six in a row over the next 11 minutes and led 10-2 with 8:50 left in the half. With 7:40 to go, Mutch tacked on another goal, but the Eagles rallied for three more in response. Smith scored her 10
th of the season with 25 seconds on the clock and Winthrop went into the break leading 13-4.

Less than a minute into the second half, Smith added her second goal of the game to make it 13-5, but again Winthrop responded and rattled off seven straight. Down 20-5, Smith netted her third goal of the game with 6:42 on the clock. The hat trick gave Smith a team high 12 goals this season. With 50 seconds left in play, JoJo Smith scored her sixth goal of the year, but the Eagles emerged victorious 20-7.

Kelsey Thompson recorded a career high 15 saves in the loss.

Winthrop took 50 shots, the most by an opponent this season, to Wofford's 10 and won 24 draw controls to five for the Terriers. The Eagles converted 3-6 free position shots, while Wofford didn't attempt one.

The Terriers return home to Gibbs Stadium for the next three contests. First up, Wofford hosts Fresno State on Saturday, March 24 at 4 p.m. Then, the Terriers host Stetson on March 29
th and Jacksonville on March 31 before hitting the road for the next two.
