Lacrosse Downed by Jacksonville

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford scored its most goals in three games, but a talented Jacksonville team emerged victorious 29-7 on Saturday afternoon in Gibbs Stadium. Jacksonville improves to 7-3 while Wofford falls to 0-10.

JoJo Franklin, Hannah Mutch, and Hannah Wurzel each scored two goals in the loss while Delaney Irwin netted one. 

Jacksonville got the scoring started just over a minute into the contest. The Terriers answered 30 seconds later when Wurzel netted her first of the game to even the score. Over the next six minutes, the Dolphins scored the next three goals of the game to push the lead to 4-1. With 20:09 left in the first half, Hannah Mutch scored her 13th goal of the season to close the gap. 

Jacksonville quickly answered with four goals in the next two minutes of play. Down 8-2, Mutch scored her second of the game and her team leading 14th of the season to cut the lead to five. Jacksonville again responded with four goals and pushed the lead to 12-3. With 11:04 left in the half, Franklin netted her first goal of the game and ninth of the year on a free position shot. In the final 9:30 of the half, Jacksonville added seven goals to hold a 19-4 halftime advantage. 

Jacksonville scored the first four of the second half over eight and a half minutes. Down 23-4, Wurzel scored on a pass from Franklin in a man up opportunity for the Terriers. Jacksonville scored the next three before Delaney Irwin scored man up on a free position shot. Irwin's goal, the fifth of the season for the freshman, cut the lead to 26-6. Two minutes later, Jacksonville scored and the 27-6 score held for the next four minutes. Then, Franklin scored her second of the game and Wofford's seventh of the game. In the final three and a half minutes, the Dolphins added two more to seal the 29-7 win. 

As a team, Jacksonville outshot Wofford 46-10 and won 25 draw controls to Wofford's 12. The Dolphins finished a perfect 10-10 on clear attempts while Wofford was 6-14 in the same category. Jacksonville picked up 25 groundballs, while Wofford finished with 12. Wofford went 2-2 in both extra man opportunities and free position shots. 

Kelsey Thompson recorded 10 saves in 60 minutes in goal. 

After three consecutive home games, Wofford hits the road for the next two. The Terriers head to Georgia to take on Kennesaw State on Friday, April 6. Then, Wofford kicks off Southern Conference play at Mercer on Sunday, April 8. Wofford returns home April 13 and April 15, hosting Detroit Mercy and Central Michigan, respectively. Those games conclude the home portion of the schedule for the Terriers, who end with three straight on the road before the conference tournament.
