Lacrosse Falls to Detroit Mercy

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's lacrosse team fell 22-7 at the hands of Detroit Mercy o on Friday afternoon in Gibbs Stadium. With the loss, Wofford falls to 0-13 on the season and 0-2 in Southern Conference action, while Detroit Mercy improves to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
 
The Terriers got on the board first as freshman Delaney Irwin scored just 30 seconds into play on a pass from Paige Sedlar. Detroit Mercy answered a minute and a half later and began a 5-0 run. Down 5-1 with 20 minutes left in the half, Paige Sedlar converted on a free position shot and pulled the Terriers within three. The next two goals went to the Titans before JoJo Franklin scored Wofford's third and her 14th of the season.
 
Detroit Mercy's Lexie Kinmond scored the next two before Hannah Mutch scored two of her own. With 9:54 on the clock, the freshman attack scored unassisted and then a minute later scored on a free position shot to pull within 9-5. Mutch leads Wofford with 17 goals in the final eight minutes of the half. The Titans added four goals and held a 14-5 lead at the break.
 
Detroit Mercy tacked on six more over the first 19 minutes of the second half. Down 20-5 Wofford scored two of the next four goals. With 10:48 on the clock, Hannah Wurzel scored on a free position shot. The Titans answered with two before Ava Alvarez netted her fourth of the season on a pass from junior Jessica Borucki.  
 
Detroit Mercy took 36 shots and Wofford took 19. The Titans barely edged the Terriers in draw controls, 16-15. Detroit Mercy converted on all 21 clear attempts while Wofford was 11-17. Each team tallied 10 saves.
 
Next up, the Terriers host Central Michigan on Sunday, April 15 in the final home game of the season. Game time has been moved up from noon to 10 AM due to the threat of inclement weather. Wofford ends the regular season with three straight road games at Delaware State, Howard and Furman.
