Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Terriers Fall to Chippewas on Rainy Sunday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's lacrosse team trailed Central Michigan, the top team in the Southern Conference at 3-0 entering the match, by just nine goals when the game was halted due to severe weather with 19:53 left on the clock and the Chippewas leading 13-4.

The teams resumed play after an over three hour weather delay and Central Michigan came away with a 16-4 victory. With the loss, Wofford falls to 0-14 on the season and 0-3 in Southern Conference play, while the Chippewas improve to 9-5 overall and remain a perfect 4-0 atop the conference.

For the second consecutive game, Delaney Irwin scored a goal to put the Terriers on the board first. Irwin's 11th goal of the season came off Hannah Mutch's ninth assist of the year. Central Michigan responded with two goals of their own. With 24:18 to go in the first half, Mutch netted her team leading 18th goal on a pass from junior Sophie Smith and tied the game at two. Central Michigan scored with 21 minutes to go in the half and added eight more over the next 18 minutes of action. With 48 seconds left, JoJo Franklin scored unassisted and the Chippewas held a 12-3 lead at the break.

Just over four minutes into the second half, Central Michigan added another goal to push their lead to 10, 13-3, but two and a half minutes later Smith scored to pull Central Michigan's lead back to nine. With 19:53 left on the clock, play was suspended due to lightning in the area.

The teams spent nearly 3.5 hours in a rain delay and returned to the field at 2:35 p.m. and played until the 12 minute mark to allow the game to be complete and the Chippewas to catch a flight. In that time, Central Michigan tacked on three more goals.

Central Michigan took 37 shots but only converted on 16, while Wofford finished with 10 shots. Central Michigan won 19 of the 22 draw controls, including 12 by Anna Schoonover, but Wofford was able to hold them in check. Four of Central Michigan's goals came on free position shots (4-8), while Wofford was 0-2 from the line. Central Michigan edged the Terriers just slightly on groundballs, 12-8.

Wofford goalkeeper Kelsey Thompson had a solid game in goal. The freshman recorded 14 saves in just over 47 minutes of play and was just one shy of matching her career high.

Wofford ends the regular season with three straight road games. First, Wofford heads to Delaware State on April 20 and then plays at Howard on April 22. The final game of the regular season is scheduled for April 28 at Furman.
