Lacrosse Makes History with First Win

Terriers Down Delaware State 18-4

DOVER, Del. – Ten Wofford players scored a goal, including five from freshman Hannah Mutch as the Wofford's women's lacrosse team ran away with an 18-4 victory at Delaware State. The win is the first in program history for the first year team.

With the win, Wofford improves to 1-14 overall and 1-3 in Southern Conference play, while Delaware State falls to 0-12 on the season and 0-3 in conference action.

"I'm so proud of this team and so excited for this moment," said head coach Ceri Miller. "They have worked extremely hard and it's nice to see the hard work pay off. They deserve this. Today was a great team win. Our defense and goalkeeper, Kelsey Thompson, really stepped up with some big stops and it allowed our offense to produce 10 different goal scorers."

"This win is great for our team and our momentum going forward, but it's also a great win for Wofford College and our administration and admissions department who helped get this program established and off the ground," said Miller.

Wofford's 18 goals scored is a new program high and the 10 different goal scorers is a program first.

Delaware State scored the first goal of the game three and a half minutes in, but Wofford exploded to score the next five. Seconds after the Hornets got on the board, JoJo Franklin converted on a free position shot. Mutch scored the next two, both unassisted, and put Wofford ahead 3-1. With 15:29 to go in the half, Franklin netted her second of the game on a pass from Paige Sedlar. Just seconds later, Mutch netted her third of the game and stretched the lead to 5-1.

With 10:32 left before the half, Delaware State scored to stop the Wofford run, but the Terriers finished the half with another 5-0 run. Mutch added her fourth of the half with 9:39 on the clock and less than a minute later junior Sophie Smith netted one of her own. Minutes later, Paige Sedlar became the fourth Terrier to record a goal. A minute and a half later, Hannah Wurzel scored on a man-up opportunity on a pass from Sedlar. The assist was the second of the game for Sedlar, a freshman. Wurzel added another with 1:14 to go in the half and the Terriers held a 10-2 lead at the half.

The Terriers opened the half on a 7-0 run to run the lead to 17-2. First, Smith scored on a goal from Mutch then Mutch answered with a goal on a pass from Sedlar. Monica Branch scored the first goal of her Wofford career with 24:11 to go in the game. Delaney Irwin put herself in the scoring column with a goal six minutes later. Emily Elstun scored her first of the game and third of the season with 16:36 to go and the 15-2 score held for eight minutes. Maeve Moran scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from Sedlar with just under five on the clock. Jasmine West scored for the Hornets with 3:39 to go to break the Wofford run. With two minutes to go, Jessica Borucki scored on an assist from Sedlar, her sixth of the game.

Wofford took 34 shots to Delaware State's 15, a season low by an opponent. Wofford picked up 15 groundballs to the Hornets' six and converted on 1-2 free position shots.
Kelsey Thompson recorded eight saves in the win.

Wofford remains on the road for the final two regular season contests. First up, Wofford takes on Howard (1-10) at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 22. Then, the Terriers' final home game is at Furman (5-10) on April 28th at noon.
