Lacrosse Wins Second Straight, Beats Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – For the second straight game the Wofford women's lacrosse team scored 17+ goals and had 10 different goal scorers as the Terriers ran past Howard 17-5 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Wofford has won two in a row and improves to 2-14, while Howard falls to 1-11 with the loss. The game was a non-conference matchup for the Terriers.

Freshman Delaney Irwin led Wofford with three goals apiece. Sophie Smith, Ally Foulke, JoJo Franklin, Hannah Mutch and Paige Sedlar each scored two while Tori Saylor, Monica Branch, Ava Alvarez and Emily Elstun added one apiece.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Thompson recorded 11 saves in goal for the Terriers.

Smith got the scoring started a little over four minutes in and then added another a minute later to help Wofford jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Another minute later, Irwin scored her first of the game on a free position shot. With 21:55 on the clock, Howard got on the board with a goal from Terie Young on a free position shot and pulled within two, 3-1.

Shortly after, Irwin responded with her second goal of the game, just five minutes in. The 4-1 score held for seven minutes before Mutch scored on a pass from Irwin. Less than a minute later, Sedlar converted on a free position shot and was the first of three Wofford goals scored in a minute span.

Elstun added a goal, unassisted, before Irwin scored her third of the game on a pass from Sedlar. With 10:16 left in the half, Franklin scored unassisted and then a minute and a half later Mutch tallied her second of the contest to put Wofford ahead 10-1. In the final six minutes of the half, Franklin added another and Branch earned her way into the scoring column and the Terriers held a 12-1 lead at the half.

Howard answered with a goal out of the half, but Wofford responded with two of its own. Ava Alvarez scored first before Saylor scored the first goal of her young career to keep Wofford up 12, 14-2. Howard was able to convert a free position shot to make it 14-3, but four minutes later Sedlar scored on a pass from Elstun and then Foulke scored on a free position shot for her first career goal.

In the final nine minutes of play, Howard added two goals, but Foulke added another with 3:47 on the clock on a pass from Maeve Moran and Wofford ran away with the 17-5 victory, its second double-digit win in as many games.

Next up, Wofford concludes both the regular season and Southern Conference play at Furman on April 28.
