SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the opening game of a weekend series, the Wofford College baseball team defeated The Citadel 5-1 on Friday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers scored first and added three runs in the sixth inning. The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but only scored one run for the final margin.

Wofford is now 26-13 on the season and 7-3 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 14-23 overall and 3-7 in the league. The Terriers were led by
Andrew Orzel with a solo home run and two RBIs, while
McClain Bradley and
Mack Nathanson had two hits each.
Adam Scott struck out nine batters for the win on the mound. The Bulldogs were held to five hits in the game by five different players.

The Bulldogs were retired in order in the top of the first inning and
Mack Nathanson was left on base after a single in the bottom of the first. In the top of the second with two outs, the Bulldogs had a single and a runner reach on an error before a strikeout ended the top half.
Max McDougald singled up the middle for a single in the bottom of the second with two outs, but was stranded. The Citadel added a single in the top of the third, but the runner was caught stealing second.

With one out in the bottom of the third,
Colin Davis was hit by a pitch and a single by
McClain Bradley put runners on the corners. A bunt single by
Mack Nathanson scored Davis for a 1-0 lead, but a double play ended the inning. The Bulldogs had runners at first and second with one out after a single and a walk. The Terriers turned a double play to end the top half of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth,
Brett Rodriguez singled but was caught stealing second. With two outs,
Max McDougald was hit by a pitch and
Lawson Hill singled. A strikeout ended the fourth inning. The Bulldogs were retired in order in the top of the fifth inning.
Colin Davis led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, but a double play and fly ball ended the inning.

The Bulldogs had two outs in the top of the sixth and two runners on base after a single and hit by pitch. A strikeout looking ended the scoring chance for the Bulldogs.
Andrew Orzel led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run for a 2-0 lead. It was his first home run of the season and second of his career.
Cody Miller added a single with one out and
Max McDougald walked. After a fielder's choice by
Lawson Hill, he stole second. With two outs, a single through the right side by
Alex Malsch scored both runners for a 4-0 advantage. The Citadel was retired in order in the top of the seventh.

McClain Bradley led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and he moved to third on a ground out. A sacrifice fly by
Andrew Orzel scored Bradley for a 5-0 lead.
Matt Ellmyer struck out the side in the top of the eighth inning.
Cody Miller was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the eighth, but was picked off second base to end the inning. The Bulldogs had back-to-back walks to open the ninth inning and an infield single loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly plated a run for a 5-1 score, but a foul out and strikeout ended the game.

Adam Scott (6-3) started for the Terriers and went seven innings without allowing a run. He gave up four hits, struck out nine batters and issued one walk. He has moved to fifth in SoCon history with 341 career strikeouts.
Matt Ellmyer worked the final two innings with one run allowed on one hit and four strikeouts.

The Citadel starting pitcher Dylan Spence (3-4) threw 5.1 innings with three runs allowed on nine hits, along with two strikeouts. Kyle Smith worked 1.2 innings and gave up two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Ryan Stamler went the final inning without allowing a hit and striking out one batter.

Wofford and The Citadel will continue the series at King Field on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
