CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Wednesday, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated by Charlotte 10-9 in 14 innings at Hayes Stadium. The score was 5-4 when Wofford had a two-run homer for a 7-4 lead in the eighth, however the 49ers tied it with a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Both teams scored one run each in the tenth and 11
th innings for a 9-9 score. After a scoreless 12
th and 13
th innings, the 49ers scored on a sacrifice fly in the 14
th for the 10-9 final.

Wofford is now 28-14 on the season and Charlotte is 22-18 overall. The game was added to the schedule after a rain out on Tuesday against Winthrop. It was the second extra-inning game of the season for the Terriers (1-1) and the longest game since a 15-inning contest against Gardner-Webb in 2010. Wofford was led by
McClain Bradley with two hits and three RBIs, while
Alex Malsch had four hits and two runs scored. The 49ers had four hits and four RBIs from Reece Hampton and three hits from Jackson Mims.

In the first inning, Wofford left one runner on base after
Mack Nathanson walked. The 49ers led off with a double and the runner scored on a fly ball and error to make it 1-0.
Brett Rodriguez walked to open the second inning, but he was stranded at second base. After Charlotte was retired in order to end the second inning, Alex Malsh led off the third inning with a single. Malsch stole second but was left on base and the 49ers went in order to end the third inning.

The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the fourth inning. The 49ers had a single to start their half of the fourth and with one out an RBI single up the middle made it a 2-0 game. Another single was followed by a double play to end the inning.
Max McDougald and
Alec Cargin had back-to-back singles to open the fifth inning. A double by
Alex Malsch scored McDougald for a 2-1 score. With one out, a single by
McClain Bradley, along with a fielding error, drove in Cargin and Malsch to take a 3-2 lead. Bradley stole third and
Mack Nathanson walked to give the Terriers runners on the corners with one out. A balk advanced the runners for a 4-2 advantage. Nathanson moved to third on a balk and scored on a ground out by
Andrew Orzel to make it 5-2 in the middle of the fifth.

The 49ers began their half of the fifth inning with a triple. With one out, a sacrifice fly cut the lead to 5-3. Charlotte left one runner on base at the end the fifth. Wofford went in order in the top of the sixth inning and the 49ers stranded one in the bottom of the sixth after an error. The Terriers were retired in order in the top of the seventh inning. After the stretch, the 49ers lead-off batter was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt and ground out advanced the runner to third when a single plated a run for a 5-4 score.

Wofford opened the eighth inning with a double by
Mack Nathanson. With one out,
Brett Rodriguez hit his second home run of the season to give the Terriers a 7-4 advantage. The 49ers were retired in order to end the eighth inning and Wofford went in order in the top of the ninth. A single led off the bottom of the ninth for the 49ers. A walk with two outs brought the tying run to the plate. Reece Hampton homered to right center to tie the game at 7-7. The 49ers added a single before a foul out sent the game to the tenth.

With one out in the top of the tenth,
Mack Nathanson hit his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot to give Wofford an 8-7 lead. The Terriers left one runner on base after
Andrew Orzel was hit by a pitch. With one out in the bottom of the tenth, the 49ers had back-to-back singles. After a strikeout, a walk loaded the bases. On a single, a run scored and the third out was made at home plate to keep the game tied at 8-8.

In the top of the 11
th,
Alex Malsch singled with two outs.
Reed Massey reached on a fielder's choice, with Malsch moving to third on the play on a throwing error. A single by
McClain Bradley scored Malsch as the Terriers took the lead at 9-8 before a fielder's choice ended the top half. With one out in the bottom of the 11
th, Jackson Mims homered for the 49ers to tie the game at 9-9.

Both teams were retired in order in the 12
th inning. With two outs in the top of the 13
th,
Alex Malsch singled and
Reed Massey added a single that moved Malsch to third base. A fly ball left both runners stranded. The 49ers had a single with two outs in the bottom of the 13
th, but a fielder's choice ended the inning.
Brett Rodriguez walked with two outs in the top of the 14
th inning, but was caught stealing second to end the half. The 49ers opened the bottom of the 14
th with a single. A double put runners in scoring position and a sacrifice fly ended the game at 10-9.

Clay Schwaner started for the Terriers and went 4.0 innings with two runs allowed on four hits.
Ty Reginelli went 2.0 innings with one run allowed on one hit.
Matt Ellmyer gave up four runs on three hits in 2.2 innings with one strikeout.
Anthony Garcia went 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on five hits, along with two strikeouts.
Scottie Wallace (0-1) threw the final 2.1 innings with one run allowed on three hits.

Charlotte starting pitcher C Pinkney went two innings without allowing a hit and two strikeouts. Chase Gooding threw an inning with one hit allowed. Jacob Craver did not allow a hit in an inning. Colby Bruce gave up three runs on three hits. Philip Perry threw 3.0 innings with two runs allowed on two hits, along with five strikeouts. Matt Horkey allowed two runs on two hits in an inning. Jonah Patten went two innings with one run allowed on one hit and four strikeouts. Austin Wynn threw 3.0 innings with one run allowed on four hits and one strikeout. Drew Morrison (1-0) had two strikeouts and a walk in the 14th inning.

Wofford will return home on Friday for the start of a three-game series against UNCG at 6:00 p.m. The teams will also meet on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
