SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night at Snyder Field against High Point, 2-0. A late goal by High Point in the 84
th minute sealed the deal for the Panthers as Wofford couldn't find the equalizer in the second half to mount a comeback. The Terriers drop to 0-1-0 on the season.
The first half was primarily all defense as neither team could manage to string together any promising shot opportunities. Wofford's lone chance to score in the first half came off a header from
Dredon Kelly that was just wide-right of the post shortly before the end of the half. High Point took a total of five shots in the first 45 minutes of play while Wofford only took two shots in the half.
The second half was more lively as the Panthers broke the scoring silence in the 71
st minute as High Point's Siggi Benonysson followed up on his own shot that deflected off the right post before striking the back left corner of the goal. The Panthers then found the finisher in the 84
th minute off a shot in the box from Bana Ganidekam. Wofford quickly responded with a shot on goal of their own about thirty seconds later from
Zach Aversano, however, it was met by the Panthers keeper as High Point took control of possession to end the contest.
Sam Ross led the Terriers with two shots on the night while teammates
Kyle Nelson,
Zach Aversano,
Dredon Kelly,
Connor Donohue, and
Ade Akinjogbin all had one apiece. Despite the loss,
Shane Berson recorded two saves in the match.
The Terriers return back to the pitch with another home contest at Snyder Field on Monday, August 27 at 7 pm against UNC Asheville.
