Men's Soccer Falls to UNC Asheville 1-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's soccer team lost a close match against UNC Asheville, 1-0, on Monday night at Snyder Field. UNC Asheville found the tiebreaker late in the second half as the Terriers had no response to push the contest into overtime. Wofford moves to 0-2-0 on the season.

The first half was played tough by both squads as neither team could find a promising shot opportunity. Wofford's two shots on goal in the first half came from Sam Ross and Ade Akinjogbin, but were both met by the Bulldogs keeper. The Bulldogs had two scoring opportunities of their own on a shot in the 28th minute and header in the 43rd minute but were controlled on two excellent saves by goalkeeper Shane Berson, leading into the half scoreless.

The second half was played even tougher as a series of yellow cards were given throughout the frame on both sides. Three Bulldogs received yellow cards in the second half while Lucas Altman and Zach Aversano claimed Wofford's for the match
.
Both defenses were persistent until the Bulldogs found the tiebreaker on a corner kick in the 78th minute, as Joe Lacasto was able to find his teammate Lane Carroll for a header that met the back-right side of the net. Wofford made a final push to score before the end of regulation, narrowly tying the match in the 82nd minute on a breath-taking header from Brett Goodman that was unfortunately saved by Bulldogs keeper Dakotah Bainter. UNC Asheville would go on to hold their ground and play out the rest of regulation, ending the match 1-0.

Brett Goodman led the Terriers with three shots while both Connor Donohue and Ade Akinjogbin had two. Sam Ross, Kyle Nelson, Dredon Kelly, and Peyton Smith all had one shot apiece in the match.

Despite the loss, Shane Berson recorded three saves on the night.

Next, the Terriers will travel to face Gardner-Webb in the SoCon/Big South Challenge on Friday, August 31 at 7 pm. Wofford will also face Winthrop on Sunday, September 2 to conclude the SoCon/Big South Challenge.
