Men's Soccer Draws at Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Wofford men's soccer team ended Friday's match against Gardner-Webb with a 0-0 draw in double overtime at Greene-Harrison Stadium. Though Wofford outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs and controlled the possession for majority of the match, the Terriers couldn't find the tiebreaker to earn the win. The Terriers move to 0-2-1 overall on the season.

The Terriers defense held its ground in the first half, not allowing Gardner-Webb to get off a single shot. The first half saw physicality from both sides as a total of six yellow cards were given out. Three Runnin' Bulldogs received yellow cards while Eduardo Velazco, Dredon Kelly, and Christian Womeldorph received cards for the Terriers. Wofford's only legitimate scoring opportunity in the first half came off a shot from Ethan Willie that was met by Gardner-Webb's keeper in the 37th minute. Both teams proceeded into the intermission scoreless.

The second half was more in possession of Wofford as the Terriers seemed to control the tempo of the match going forward. The Terriers narrowly almost found the tiebreaker in the 72nd minute off a header from Andreas Suri that unfortunately deflected off the crossbar. The Terriers also found scoring chances off shots from Velazco and Ade Akinjogbin but were unsuccessful in beating the Gardner-Webb keeper, ultimately pushing the match into overtime.

The Terriers defense only allowed three shots for Gardner-Webb in the second half as Wofford outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 7-3.

Wofford was eager to get on the scoreboard in the first overtime, finding shots from Lucas Altman and Saviour Anyagri that were wide. The Terriers had a chance on a corner kick opportunity delivered from Zach Aversano that found Anyagri for a shot from the far right wing, but was unfortunately high on the release.

The second overtime was more of the same as the Terriers found shots from Akinjogbin and Connor Donohue but were unsuccessful, eventually sending the contest to a draw in the 110th minute.

Connor Donohue led the Terriers with four shots on the match while Ade Akinjogbin followed with three shots. Teammates Sam Ross, Saviour Anyagri, Lucas Altman, and Zach Aversano had two shots each while Ethan Willie and Andreas Suri recorded one apiece. Wofford outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 19-4 in the match.

The Terriers conclude the Big South/SoCon Challenge on Sunday, September 2, where they will face Winthrop for a 6 pm contest.
