Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball falls to No. 23 Purdue, Tulsa to open season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Wofford volleyball team tipped off its 2018 campaign on Friday morning, falling to No. 23 Purdue before dropping a match against Tulsa in the Purdue Reamer Club Premier Xtra Tournament on Friday evening.

The Terriers fell 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 to the nationally-ranked Boilermakers, while dropping three out of four sets (25-22, 25-17, 20-25, 25-22) to the Golden Hurricane. Catie Cronister, who is approaching 1,000 career kills, led Wofford with 19 on the day, while Colleen Reilly tallied 16 and Riley Coonan totaled 15, respectively.

After the two sides opened up by trading points, Purdue was looking pull away but Reilly cut the deficit to just one, recording back-to-back kills to make the score 9-8 in favor of the Boilermakers. After each team recorded a point, Purdue reeled off four in a row to take command of the first set, ultimately claiming its biggest set victory of the match. Despite hanging tough in both of the next two sets, Purdue's attack was relentless, slowly pulling away from Wofford each time to claim the season-opening sweep.

Against Tulsa, the Terriers jumped out to an 11-6 lead, combining for eight kills early in the opening set. The Golden Hurricane responded with a 5-0 run of its own to knot the game up at 11-11, later taking a 22-16 advantage and holding off Wofford to claim set number one. Never trailing in set two, Tulsa jumped out to a 5-2 advantage in the third in search of a sweep. Registering four kills, Wofford would take a 7-6 lead that it would not relinquish to force a fourth set. Trailing 22-16 in the fourth, the Terriers claimed six of the next eight points to climb to within two, before the Golden Hurricane's Emily Thorson recorded her 14th kill of the match to seal the game for Tulsa.

The Terriers, who are coming off a 22-11 season in 2017, return to the court on Saturday, facing Bowling Green at 12 p.m.
