SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team came up short losing 3-0 against Clemson on Sunday night at Snyder Field. The Terriers faced all they could handle as Clemson outshot Wofford 20-5 for the match. The loss drops Wofford to 1-4-1 overall on the season.
Clemson was relentless with their attack to start the contest, firing 12 shots in the first half while Wofford only shot four. Despite Clemson's shot advantage, goalkeeper
Maria Mon was up to the challenge saving seven shots in the first half, including a penalty kick. The Tigers first goal came in the 18
th minute off a corner kick where Mon initially deflected the cross from Clemson's Sydney Dawson, but unfortunately set up Courtney Jones for the easy follow up to give the Tigers the lead. Wofford's shot opportunities in the first half came from two high shots by
Hayley Younginer and a shot on goal by
Dani Segovia that was saved by Clemson's keeper.
The rest of the way would prove to be all Clemson as they dominated the second half, outshooting Wofford 8-1. The Tigers found their second goal in the 62
nd minute as a series of deflections inside the crowded box allowed for an easy chip in by Mariana Speckmaier. The Terriers lone scoring chance in the second half came from a shot by
Hayley Younginer that unfortunately came off high again in the 80th minute. Clemson's third and final goal of the match came shortly before the end of regulation in the 86
th minute off a shot inside the box from Kimber Haley.
The Terriers were led by
Hayley Younginer with three shots while
Dani Segovia followed behind as the only other shot taker for Wofford with two. Despite the loss,
Maria Mon had an impressive outing recording 10 saves in the match.
Wofford failed to earn any corner kick opportunities while Clemson had eight on the match.
The Terriers return to the pitch on Friday, September 7
th for a 7 pm contest at Snyder Field against crosstown opponent USC Upstate.
