SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford volleyball team swept Mercer at home on Saturday, taking down the Bears 25-16, 28-26, 25-23. Junior
Catie Cronister continued to be an impact player for the Terriers, leading the squad in kills (11), digs (10) and blocks (3).
Lorissa King and
Noa Miller set up much of the Wofford attack, dishing out 17 and 16 assists, respectively.
The Terriers wasted no time gaining control of the match, jumping out to a 9-3 lead, registering five points via the kill. Coming out of a timeout, the Bears scored back-to-back points as they looked to cut into the deficit. Wofford responded, however, scoring four in a row to take a commanding 18-10 lead before taking set one comfortably 25-16.
Holding a 9-4 lead in the second, Wofford looked primed to take a 2-0 lead over Mercer, but the Bears would take seven of the next eight points to take an 11-10 lead. The two sides traded points and were knotted up at 24-24 before a
Kelly Bossert kill put the Terriers ahead by one. Mercer did not flinch, scoring the next two points to make the score 26-25. With the set on the line, Miller set up
Kara Shacklette for a kill to even the score before finding
Bijonae Jones moments later to give Wofford a 28-27 lead, finishing the set on a Mercer attack error.
Matching each other point-for-point, the score was tied at 5-5 before the Terriers ripped off eight of the next nine points, taking control of the set 13-6. Much like Wofford, the Bears responded by taking seven of the next eight to cut the deficit to just one (14-13). With the score tied at 20, Bossert sent home a kill before a pair of kills by Jones put the Terriers up 23-20. After Mercer made the score 24-23, Cronister rose up an smacked her 11th kill of the day to give Wofford its second SoCon victory in as many days.
The Terriers, who now stand at 9-8 overall (2-2 SoCon), hit the road for their next two matches, facing ETSU on Friday before traveling to Western Carolina on Saturday.
