Women's Soccer Downed by Samford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team dropped a conference match against Samford, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field. Samford's attack proved too much to handle for the Terriers as they outshot Wofford 32-7 for the match. The Terriers move to 0-4-0 in SoCon play and 2-9-1 overall.

The first half was all Samford as the Terriers were on the defensive for nearly the whole 45 minutes. Samford's attack was relentless throughout the way with their defense playing solid, allowing only one shot for Wofford in the frame. Wofford's lone shot came early on with Hayley Younginer finding a chance to strike in the first minute of play, but was unfortunately blocked by a Samford defender. The Bulldogs would find their first score of the day in the 11th minute on a shot from inside the box by Samford's Caroline Orman. The Bulldogs would continue to fire a plethora of shots for the duration of the first half as Maria Mon tallied seven saves to keep the lead at one entering the intermission.

The Bulldogs outshot Wofford in the first half 14-1.

The second half was more of the same with Samford continuing to fire shots from all angles of the field. The Terriers responded with a shot from Marta Izquierdo early on before Samford's Erin Bonner would finish a pass into the box from the close left wing to extend the Bulldogs lead to two goals. Going forward, the Terriers made progressive strives in finding a rhythm to attack, however, Samford's defense remained tight, blocking a pair of shots from Hayley Younginer and Dani Segovia. Younginer almost broke the silence for the Terriers in the 88th minute on a sneaky shot that fell just high of the crossbar, though, Samford would go on to play out the remaining two minutes to earn the 2-0 win at the end of regulation.

Hayley Younginer led the Terriers with four shots, one being on goal, for the match while Eva Dailey, Rachel Shinnick, and Marta Izquierdo all had one each.

Despite the loss, Maria Mon recorded a new season high with 15 saves on the match.

Next, the Terriers will travel to VMI for a 4 p.m. conference matchup on Friday, October 5.
