Hoover, Jackson push Wofford past VMI

Terriers off to best program start in Division I era

LEXINGTON, Va. – Behind huge efforts from Nathan Hoover and Cameron Jackson, the Wofford men's basketball team defeated VMI 90-76 on Saturday afternoon. Moving to 14-4 on the season, Wofford is out to its best start in program history in the Division I era, passing the 2014-15 squad which started 13-4 en route to a SoCon championship and 28-7 overall record.

"I think this is one of the better teams that I've had," said Wofford head coach Mike Young. "I'll stop short of saying this is the best team I've had, because we've had some awfully good teams, but this is a heck of a Wofford team that can beat you in a lot of ways. I'm not sure what the ceiling is, but it's a high one."

Hoover led the way with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting while Jackson recorded his fourth double-double of the season, scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

"Jackson played a great ball game. He can play anywhere in the country," Young said. "He picked up a couple fouls early, but he battled through it, and I thought Nathan (Hoover) was fantastic."

The Terriers, who are also off to a program-best 6-0 start in conference play and season-best five-game winning streak, have a gap in the schedule, returning to the court on Saturday when they host Furman at 7 p.m.

"These conference games are hard," said Young. "We didn't play our best today, but I'll take a conference win on the road any day. We're going to take tomorrow off and get back to it Monday as we prepare for Furman."

Jackson was rolling from the start, scoring the first six points for the Terriers. VMI was not deterred, however, going on a 12-0 run to take a 17-6 lead. Matthew Pegram came off the bench and hit back-to-back buckets to end the nearly three-minute drought for Wofford. From there, Jackson would set up Chevez Goodwin for a pair of dunks and Hoover for a 3-pointer as Wofford cut the deficit to just three (24-21).

"VMI jumped on us quick today," said Hoover. "But we were able to come back and get over that hill, but we'll have to start better moving forward because everyone is going to give us their best."

The Keydets would extend the lead to eight points, as Wofford had to chip away, re-gaining the lead after a pair of Hoover 3-pointers and another dunk from Goodwin made the score 38-35. With a minute and a half to play in the first, Jackson stripped the ball away from VMI and scored just seconds later to give Wofford a two-point advantage at the break (40-38).

"I credit VMI, they played really hard today, Young said. "They made seven threes in the first half. They're a well-coached team."

Hoover opened up scoring in the second, hitting an elbow jumper before free throws from Fletcher Magee and Jackson extended the lead to nine. A pair of 3-pointers from the Keydets cut the deficit to four, but Hoover answered each time down, scoring seven in a row as the Terriers moved the lead back to eight.

"We have so many great players on this team," said Hoover on Wofford's balanced offense. "Even if some of our shots aren't always falling, we know we can keep getting stops and keep getting rebounds, and we'll pick each other up."

With VMI refusing to go away, Jackson began to take over, converting a three-point play before a steal and dunk the next time down the court put Wofford in front by 15. Moments later, Magee would drill his first 3-pointer of the game at the 6:09 mark as the Terriers were off to the races, coasting to the 14-point victory.
