Murphy hits game-winner in overtime thriller

Wofford defeats Samford 107-106

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second consecutive game, sophomore point guard Storm Murphy knocked down a game-winning shot for Wofford, this time lifting the Terriers past the Samford Bulldogs 107-106 in overtime at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Thursday night.

Fletcher Magee led the Terriers with 31 points, hitting a 3-pointer with eight seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 93-93 and send it into overtime, where he would score a go-ahead bucket with just 16 seconds to play. Samford's Josh Sharkey, who had 19 points and 16 assists, answered to put Samford ahead by one with six seconds left, leading to Murphy's game-winning elbow jumper as time expired.

"Usually, four seconds can be about three dribbles maybe, if I'm really pushing it," said Murphy. "I just put my head down and knew I could get to around the elbow and pull up."

Murphy, who knocked down a 3-pointer on Saturday to put Wofford ahead of Furman 57-54 with 18 seconds to play, was in and out of Thursday's game battling dehydration and illness.

"I got sick yesterday, and I really didn't think I was going to play tonight," said Murphy. "This afternoon I felt so drowsy, exhausted, drained, you name it, but Alyss, our training staff and the doctors took good care of me, so I just tried to drink as much fluids as I could to stay hydrated and push through."

"What a huge shot from a tough kid," said Wofford head coach Mike Young on Murphy's performance and game-winning shot. "He was sick all day, but tough guys like Storm say the heck with that. He battled and delivered tonight."

All five Wofford starters scored in double figures, as Nathan Hoover scored 23 and Cameron Jackson had 19 points and eight rebounds. Fellow big Keve Aluma turned in the first double-double of his career, scoring 12 points and grabbing career-high 12 rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end, helping lead to Wofford's 28 second-chance points. Murphy, who totaled 11 and was battling illness throughout the game, was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor, going 3-for-3 from 3-point range in the first half to keep the Terriers within striking distance of the hot-shooting Bulldogs.

As a team, Samford shot 66.7 percent from the floor and were 11-for-15 from 3-point range, going 19-for-20 from the line. Like Wofford, all five of the Bulldogs' starters reached double figures, led by Brandon Austin's 31 points.

"They outplayed us," Young said of Samford. "Scott (Padgett) had his team prepared better than I had us prepared, and we feel extremely fortunate to win."

The Terriers shot 55.4 percent from the floor and were 47.2 percent from 3-point range, outrebounding the Bulldogs 26-20 and creating 17 turnovers. Wofford trailed Samford for over 39 minutes of the game, leading for just 1:53 out of the 45 minutes played on Thursday night.

Wofford continues to add to its historic start, improving to 16-4 overall while going a perfect 8-0 in Southern Conference play.

Samford opened the game by jumping out to a 6-2 lead as Reuben Guerrero, who had 16 points, scored a pair of quick buckets. Nathan Hoover knocked down a jumper and a three to make the score 9-7 in favor of the Bulldogs, but Guerrero continued to dominate inside as Samford extended its lead to eight (22-14).

After a pair of 3-pointers from Murphy, Samford extended its lead back to seven. As Samford looked to be in control, the lane opened up for Jackson who slammed it home, sparking a 9-2 run for the Terriers that was capped off by a Donovan Theme-Love scoop and score to give Wofford its first lead of the game (35-33). Magee and Jackson knocked down 3-pointers to tie the score at 43 apiece with 1:37 left in the first, but Samford would score six unanswered going into the break ahead 49-43.

With Murphy starting the second half on the bench, the Bulldogs carried their momentum from the first half into the second, quickly extending the lead to nine (54-43). Magee connected from 3-point range, getting fouled and converting the 4-point play as the Terriers looked to cut into the deficit. The Wofford defense began to make an impact, getting a pair of steals and layups en route to a 10-0 which forced a Samford timeout.

Austin, who had 11 points in the first half, continued to be red hot from 3-point range, knocking down back-to-back treys to put the Bulldogs back up by nine (67-56). Wofford would get 3-pointers from Hoover, Jackson and Fletcher, but each time Samford answered, getting a pair of 3-point plays from Myron Gordon and Sharkey to hold a four-point lead (81-77).

"It's tough to guard someone so quick," said Murphy of Sharkey. "We definitely didn't play our best defensively. When they have weapons like Sharkey, big guys that can score and shooters knocking down shots around him like tonight, they make it tough."

With time dwindling down, Hoover knocked down his fourth 3-pointer of the game as the Terriers drew to within three points with 30 seconds to play (93-90). On Samford's offensive possession, Aluma came up with a huge block and when Guerrero came down with the rebound, Chevez Goodwin rose up to swat away his putback attempt as the Terriers corralled the ball. Wofford worked the ball to the top of the key where Magee buried a 3-pointer with eight seconds left to knot up the score at 93-93 and force overtime.

Magee opened up overtime with a jumper in the lane before draining back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Terriers a 101-100 advantage with 2:20 to play. Austin and Guerrero each responded with a bucket in the lane as Samford took a 104-101 lead with 47 seconds left. After Jackson forced a Samford turnover, Hoover drew a foul on and hit both free throws to pull Wofford to within one point.

Wofford's pressure defense came up huge once again on the next possession, as Murphy and Goodwin combined to force a jump ball with the possession arrow favoring the Terriers. On the ensuing inbounds play, Jackson set a screen and dropped the ball off to Magee who came off a curl and knocked down a jumper to put Wofford ahead 105-104.

Sharkey got the ball and drove into the lane, quickly putting the Bulldogs back ahead. Murphy received the ball with just over six seconds to play, dribbled the length of the court and hit a step-back jumper from the elbow to lift the Terriers to their seventh straight victory.

"I'm glad we got to learn a lot in a win. I'm glad we have a quick turnaround. We're going to play better Saturday in this beautiful building."

Wofford will return to the court on Saturday, welcoming Chattanooga to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium at 7 p.m.
