Magee's record-breaking three lifts Wofford over Mercer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A record-breaking, game-sealing 3-pointer from senior guard Fletcher Magee pushed Wofford past Mercer 78-74 at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Saturday night. Magee's 415th career 3-pointer moved him into first place all-time in Southern Conference history for made threes, passing Davidson's Stephen Curry (414).

Leading 73-72 with 47 seconds to play, Cameron Jackson dove on the floor for a steal, leading to Storm Murphy finding Magee in transition for the record-breaking 3-pointer with 38 seconds to play.

"The fact that the shot came at a point where it meant so much in the game was great," Magee said. "I was just thinking about the game because we needed every single point to win this game. I was just trying to play my best defense and do anything to help the team win."

From there, Nathan Hoover would ice the game with a pair of free throws to improve Wofford to 4-0 in conference play and 12-4 overall on the season.

"Cam does so much for us," Magee said of the moments leading up to his late-game three. "His scoring, defense, rebounding and everything else makes this team go, and his active hands started the transition that led to the three."

Magee led the way with 20 points on five threes, while Jackson had 16 points and six rebounds, drawing eight fouls while picking up two steals and two blocks. Hoover totaled 12 points while Murphy and Tray Hollowell added 10 in the victory.

The Terriers looked like they were going to run away with the game early after a pair of 3-pointers from Murphy put Wofford in front 11-4. Mercer responded quickly with 10-0 run of their own, taking a three-point lead.

"They were well prepared tonight and they never went away," Wofford head coach Mike Young said of Mercer. "They were desperate for a win and they really made us work."

From here, two sides matched each other bucket-for-bucket, with Magee's second 3-pointer of the contest giving Wofford a 32-29 lead. After the Terriers forced a Mercer turnover, Cam Jackson lofted a pass from midcourt to Magee in the paint, who converted a layup to extend the lead to five. Wofford would continue to pressure Mercer, as a Keve Aluma dunk highlighted the team's 10-2 run going into the break.

Aluma continued to be a force in the second half, opening up the scoring with a putback. On the other end, Aluma grabbed a board and found Murphy who took it the distance for the layup. With Wofford up 43-35, Jackson blocked a shot and found Hoover who would convert a 3-point play to put the Terriers up by 11.

Once again, the Bears battled back, this time scoring 12 unanswered to take a one-point lead. Wofford showed its resilience however, as Aluma rose up and swatted a shot away, leading to a Hollowell 3-pointer that ignited the crowd and the offense.

Mercer would end the scoreless drought to make the score 57-52, but the next trip down Jackson threw down a tomahawk jam that pushed the lead back to seven. With the score 63-60, Magee came off a curl to and drilled a 3-pointer while getting fouled, sinking the free throw to give Wofford some breathing room.

Hitting five free throws along the way, the Bears would work their way back and take a 70-69 lead with 3:08 to play. On Wofford's next possession, Magee hit his 414th career 3-pointer to give the Terriers a two-point edge. Mercer's Djordje Dimitrijevic, who scored a game-high 21 points, answered to tie the game up at 72-72, leading to a go-ahead free throw from Jackson.

Forcing Mercer's 17th turnover of the contest, Jackson stole the ball, kicked it to Murphy who found Magee in transition for the game-clinching bucket.

"We feel fortunate to get that win. We didn't play our best, but Mercer had something to do with that, and they took us right down to the wire."

Wofford hits the road on Thursday for its second road conference game of the year, traveling to UNCG to face the Spartans at 7 p.m.

"When we go to UNCG, we have to be ready," said Young. "Our preparation has to be good because we are going to have a lot of games in our league like the one we had tonight, and I expect Thursday to be that way."
