JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Wofford volleyball team traveled to ETSU on Friday, dropping a five-set heartbreaker to the Bucs.
The Bucs edged out the Terriers in five, (27-25, 14-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-17) with Riley Coonan, Catie Cronister and Meghan Yaffa each totaling 11 kills.
With the loss, Wofford falls to 10-9 (3-2 SoCon) on the season. The Terriers will close out their road swing on Saturday, facing Western Carolina at 6 p.m.
Neither team was able to gain ground until the Terriers won six of eight points to take a 15-11 lead. After the Bucs cut the deficit to two, Wofford scored three points in a row to force an ETSU timeout. The Bucs responded out of the break, taking three out of four points to make the score 21-20 in favor of the Terriers. After the Bucs took a 23-21 lead, Wofford tied the set twice and ultimately grabbed the two-point win.
Wofford looked to remain in control, taking five consecutive points early to go ahead 7-4. The Bucs responded with a 6-0 run, forcing a Terrier timeout. ETSU kept Wofford at bay, extending its lead to six, taking set two by 11. The Bucs carried their momentum into the third, taking the first seven points of the third. Wofford cut the deficit to three, but ETSU pulled away to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Aiming to extend the match, Wofford jumped ahead 10-6, holding that four-point advantage until the Bucs rallied to make the score 20-19. Wofford took the next two points, forcing an ETSU timeout but the Terriers held on to even the match at two sets apiece. Â
The fifth and final set was neck-and-neck, with Wofford going ahead 10-9. ETSU rallied to jump ahead 12-10 but the Terriers tied the set at 13-13, avoiding match point two more times until the Bucs finally claimed the match with a 17-15 win.
