SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over East Tennessee State University on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field.
Cameryn Burke scored the game-winner for the Terriers with under six minutes remaining in the game.
Wofford is now 5-9 on the season, improving to 2-4 in Southern Conference play. ETSU is 4-8-3 overall and 0-4-1 in the league. Prior to the game, the Terriers honored the four seniors on the squad -
Abigail Albritton,
Cameryn Burke,
Allie Cardew and
Erin Roche.
Overall the Bucs had a 13-7 advantage in shots on the game, but the Terriers had the advantage in the second half.
Cameryn Burke and
Katie Gilligan each had two shots for Wofford, while
Maria Mon had six saves in goal.
"It was great to come out of the game with a win," said head coach
Emily Grant. "At halftime we challenged them to take more shots and put the ball on net, which is exactly what Cameryn did on her goal. For a senior to get the game-winner on senior day is a great moment."
The Bucs had the first six shots of the game during the opening twenty minutes of play, which included two saves by
Maria Mon. The Terriers had a pair of corner kicks late in the first half but were unable to get a shot on goal.
In the opening six minutes of the second half, the Bucs picked up two yellow cards.
Erin Roche had a shot go wide before ETSU responded with a pair of shots that were saved by Mon. At 60:27,
Katie Gilligan had a shot hit the cross bar. Both teams continued to get offensive pressure over the next twenty minutes of action.
Cameryn Burke scored an unassisted goal at 84:07 on a shot to the top right corner to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. The Bucs had a shot with under a minute to play, but Mon came up with the save.
The Terriers will be on the road for the final three regular season games, beginning on Friday, October 18, at Furman. Trips to Mercer on October 25 and The Citadel on October 27 will complete the regular season.
