BURLINGTON, N.C. – Wofford men's golfer Walker Simas had his strongest outing of the 2019 fall season, shooting a 7-under-par 206 to tie for fifth place at the Elon Phoenix Invitational.
As a team, Wofford was 5-over-par for the tournament (857), finishing in 11th place. The Terriers opened up with a 3-over-par 287 on Monday, shooting 285 in rounds two and three.
Simas opened up the tournament with a 2-under-par 69 on Monday, birdieing five holes. In the second round Monday, Simas, who finished in fourth place at the 2018 Elon Phoenix Invitational, posted a score of 1-under-par in round two on Monday afternoon.
"Really proud of Walker," said Wofford Head Coach Alex Hamilton. "He's put together back-to-back great tournaments here."
The senior from Charlotte, North Carolina, would close strong with two eagles and two birdies to post a 4-under-par round three and jump up to fifth place overall.
"Walker's 4-under-par today was really solid," Hamilton said. "After being sick last week, it's good to see him fight and bounce back this week."
Nick Willis had a good showing for the Terriers as well, finishing 1-over-par for the tournament. Willis opened up round one by shooting 1-under-par, before a round-two setback of 4-over-par. The junior responded on Tuesday, birdieing five holes to post a 2-under-par 69 in round three.
"Nick played some strong golf this week," Hamilton said. "He posted his first under-par score for the year so that was a good sign."
Walker Jones would finish 5-over-par for the tournament and Henry Augenstein rounded out the scoring for Wofford with a total score of 220.
"The team battled in this tournament," Hamilton said. "It was good to see Henry put up a strong second round for us (-2)."
Wofford will have a week off, returning to the course on October 28 when it competes at the Steelwood Invitational in Loxley, Alabama.
