Wofford falls at The Citadel in four sets

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team traveled to The Citadel for a midweek contest on Wednesday, falling to the Bulldogs in four sets (23-25, 23-25, 25-22, 20-25).

Catie Croinster led Wofford with 17 kills and 16 digs, while Claire Meier posted a career-high 14 kills. Lorissa King had a double-double of her own, dishing out 42 assists and picking up 14 digs.

With the loss, Wofford sits one game below .500 overall (10-11) and in conference play (3-4). The Terriers will return home after their five-game road swing on Friday, hosting Chattanooga at 6 p.m.

The teams started out even in the first set, and after a pair of kills from Cronister, the Terriers led 10-6. The Citadel closed the gap, eventually tying the set at 13-13. From here, the two sides went back and forth with neither team yielding ground. Trailing by one, the Bulldogs took a timeout and won the next three points to make the score 22-20. Wofford battled but could not tie up the set, eventually falling by a pair.

The Citadel jumped out to an early lead in the second, doubling up Wofford to the tune of 10-5. Midway through the set, Wofford rallied and took 9-of-11 points from the Bulldogs, grabbing a two-point advantage down the stretch. After The Citadel took a 23-20 lead, Wofford rallied to within one as Meier sent home a kill that made the score 24-23 in favor of the Bulldogs, but the Terriers ran out of time and fell behind two sets to none.

Determined to extend the match, Wofford answered each point by The Citadel to start the third set, taking a 10-6 lead courtesy of a service ace by Kennedy Smith and three errors by the Bulldogs. The Terriers extended their lead to five, keeping The Citadel at bay until Meier closed out the set with a kill.

Wofford would take the lead early in the fourth, jumping ahead 16-13 after a pair of errors from the Bulldogs. The Citadel charged back, tying the set at 16-16 and pulling ahead 20-18 to force a timeout from the Terriers. Wofford could not mount a comeback, dropping five of the last seven points to fall 3-1.
