SPARTANBURG, S.C. - After dropping the first set and falling behind two sets to one, the Wofford volleyball team won the next two sets to defeat Chattanooga in five ((21-25, 25-15, 25-27, 25-18, 15-9) on Friday night.
Catie Cronister had another big night for the Terriers, tallying 19 kills and 17 digs while
Riley Coonan matched her season-high 14 kills in the win. The tandem was also a force defensively, totaling 15 blocks.
With the win, Wofford is now 11-11 on the season and improves to 4-4 in SoCon play. The Terriers return to action next Friday, traveling to Mercer for a matchup with the Bears at 7 p.m.
The two teams looked even to start the match, as Wofford jumped ahead 12-9 and looked to pull away. Chattanooga would rally and take an 18-17 lead. The two sides would be knotted up at 19-19, but the Mocs took six of the next eight points to grab set one.
The Terriers came out of the gates firing in set two, grabbing a 7-2 lead via a kill by Coonan. Chattanooga would rally to within a pair, but Wofford kept the Mocs at bay, pushing the lead to eight points and forcing an error from the Mocs to take the set 25-15.
Chattanooga jumped out to an early lead in the third, but Wofford rallied and took an 11-8 lead after a kill from
Kara Shacklette and an error. Leading 20-16, the Mocs won the next six points before claiming the set the set 27-25.
The fourth was neck-and-neck, with Chattanooga taking a slight lead early. In the midpoint of the set, Wofford went ahead 18-14 as it looked to force a fifth and final set. The Terriers would not falter down the stretch, getting an ace from
Meghan Yaffa and an error to even the match at two sets apiece.
It was the Mocs who looked strong to start the fifth, leading 6-3 and forcing a timeout from Wofford. Out of the break, the Terriers scored six points in a row to jump ahead by three. Chattanooga would get no closer than two, as Cronister slammed home her 19th kill of the match to give Wofford the five-set win.
